looking for advice for getting a small dog

I actually got my 2 year old dog from a breeder.  He was returned to the breeder because the elderly woman could no longer care for him.  A breeder may not be a bad place to ask if they know of anyone who is looking to place their purebred that they can no longer keep.  I did get my boy for free[:D] to good home.

What about a pembroke welsh corgi? Tops out at 28lbs. give or take, very portable and require only brushing. Theres some cute corgi mixes on petfinder.

Do not overlook the West Highland Terrier.  They love apartment living, travel well, and do not require too much grooming if you like the natrual curly look.  Also, they play well with large dogs.  At the dog park my Westie runs with Great Danes and Mastiffs, so a little West Highland White Terrier would have a great time with your golden retriever.

I am totally smitten with Cavalier King Charles Spaniels.  They're sweet, loving loyal, and fun-loving.  Here is my Bentley.

How bout a cockapoo or JRT?  I really like my pomeranian, but he's pretty vocal, so it might not be good for apartment living.

I definitely second paying your local shelter a visit.  They just might have a dog that catches your eye.

Cavaliers are soo cute!! I would think they would be a good choice.  I also like Whippets, and Greyhounds, (I know you were looking at small dogs, but Greyhounds are supposed to be great apt. dogs, real couch potatos)  Boston terriers are also neat dogs.  From my understanding, fairly easy keepers.  Don't think I would recommend a JRT for an apt. unless you are super active.  JRT usually need to burn off a lot of energy.
