looking for advice for getting a small dog

I'm 21 and living on my own. I'm moving into an apartment that allows pets....finally. I've been around large dogs all my life and don't know a lot about smaller breeds. I know I want a dog below 30 lbs. I want one who's about a year old, also. I'm trying to do research on breeds, but I feel like I don't know all that's out there. I would love some suggestions and advice. Thanks!

How about just going to the shelter and finding one the size and age you are lookin for...?  Good luck!

Because I'm just worried about how big it would get. and that it would be ok with visiting my parents where my Golden lives.

There are a ton of small breeds and it's impossible to recommend one without knowing any criteria.

What kind of activity level are you looking for? Do you want a dog with short or long hair? Are you willing to have a breed that needs professional grooming? Do you want a dog that is non shedding? What type of personality/temperament are you looking for?

There are a lot of things to consider: tempermant, size, age, shedding or non?  How much grooming?  How active do you want dog to be?  Are you looking for a companion type or more active?  What do you plan on doing with the dog?  Do a web search on dog breeds and read up on them.[;)]

I want a friendly little dog who likes to ride in the car, so I can take her from school to my parents house. I want long hair, but with the little lhasas I like when their hair is cut just so it's curly (does that make sense?) I definitely want a companion. I'm used to my lazy golden retriever. I'm into Lhasa Apsos or maybe a Malti-poo. You know, something in that range. I just don't want to leave another breed out if I'm missing one. Thanks guys!

Please please please...before you go to a breeder check out the rescues and the local shelters.  There are alot of purebred dogs at the shelters and rescues that are available for adoption.  Also, if you have trouble finding a dog that "fits" with you at the shelters/rescues, contact a breeder.  Do not help perpetuate the puppy mills by buying a pet-store puppy.

Good luck, do your research and you'll get the right dog.

Have you considered a Papillon?  I too was a "large breed girl," but my townhouse only allowed small breeds.  Long story short, I got a Papillon and it was the best decision I could have made! I was worried that he would be "sissy" but he acts just like a miniature border collie, lol.  I highly recommend checking them out (especially b/c you said you liked long hair).  Mine also LOVES riding in the car and is great around all dogs (including my parents aggressive cocker spaniel).

Sounds good. Yeah, i definitely planned on looking in shelters. I've been browsing petfinder, because I'd rather travel than get a dog from a pet store. I just wish I could shrink my golden. haha. But, thanks everyone.

You said about a year old so any dog at a shelter about that age will not grow much more than it already has, also even if you decide on younger you can tell about how big they will get because the shelter will tell you what it may be and you can tell by the size of the paws and length of the legs.  Good luck, I sure hope you decide to get a baby from a shelter.[:)

Before I got my Shih Tzu I had a Rottie, he was a great dog but not very portable with a small car and 2 adults and 3 kids in the car.  I also rescued him.  So when I got around to looking for another dog I decided that I wanted a more portable breed.  I love my new dog and I can take him anywhere with everyone in the car.

Also, it occured to me that a breeder would be less likely to have a dog that is already a year old.  Most breeders place their dogs when they are pups.  You might have a better chance finding the age you want at a shelter--or even a breed specific rescue.
