Pointers on Pointers. :P

Here is a pretty picture of a German Shorthaired Pointer.  They also come in black and are more speckled and have a pointier, more streamlined head that English Pointers. they don't have as much of the "flank shirt" as the English Pointer, either.  ....and they are suppose to like water.

Hi Diane, just been reading all your information on gsh and english pointers, you know your stuff!! also looked at all the websites there are some beautiful english pointers on them and the puppies are beautiful too, the kissamee website said you are welcome to visit and see the pointers in training "we may be booking a flight out" lol shame they are in the US a bit far !!!!!
 
Sometimes i feel that not having jazzie to work is a bit- well unfair if thats the correct word,because they do what they do so well but hopefully he wont be missing out on anything as long as we give him all the TLC he needs.

Claire, your Jazzie is a really good looking pointer.  He's going to grow up just gorgeous.  I know hwat you mean about not doing field trials or hunting.  We take our girls to a big 40 acre field to let them quarter and point, just for the heck of it.  They have very different styles.  Trudy stalks along fast and  low and points low to the ground like a cat, and Grace bounds through the field with her nose up sniffing and freezes in a hard point.  Sometimes they point at the same bird or Grace will honour Trudy's point. 

I am involved with the Illinois Birddog Rescue Organization and have to know a lot about these critters.  My director has been pushing me to trial, but frankly, I have never shot a rifle and would probably hurt myself [].  We do agility for bonding, fun and just getting them to think.

I'm glad that you looked at all the stuff.  It's fun to see all the varieties of bird dogs.  There are so many that we haven't touched upon here. [8|]  Just have fun with your fella and don't take anything too seriously - he's still a baby.  They are fabulous.

You know... I just remembered this.... one time a guy came up to me in Petsmart and said, "That's a German shorthaired Pointer mix, right? My mother breeds them. She looks like a mix of the German and English." (or something like that.) I told him I didn't know what she was. Is mixing the German and English (or just "Pointer") common?
 
Is the webbed feet gene dominant? She hates water but like I said her feet are webbed, or at least partially webeed, if that's possible.
 
By the way I agree with you GSD's are beautiful dogs.... they are on my "might want to adopt someday" list []

I totally agree with that guys assumption!  That would explain the color (black for English pointer), the shape of her head (GPS), her body shape and her feet (GPS)!  I don't know that they are intentionally interbred, but I've seen it before and if you think about it, would be an easy mix. 
 
As far as liking or disliking water, I think that if you were living on a lake or did a lot of water stuff, your dog would probably acclimate to the water. GSPs in spite of the webbed feet, aren't water crazy like labs.  Besides, I've met labs that weren't crazy about water! [8|] 
 
Did you see the GSP at Westminster a couple of years ago?  She was breathtaking!

They are also wonderful birddogs that are really gaining in popularity.  They are so beautiful and smart.  I know a guy who runs his in agility.

The more I think about it... the German and English Pointer mix makes more sense. Both are common around here. She actually has a bit of brown (behind her ears and part of her muzzle, right below the nose) too. But shhhh about this.... I plan on eventually trying to get her into the AKC ILP program if she does agility so let's just say she's a Pointer []
 
I didn't see the Westminster GSP but I'm sure she/he was gorgeous. One of my favorite breeds.
