Dozen dogs escape fire at Cape Cod animal hospital

    Tuesday, March 10, 2009

BARNSTABLE, Mass. —  An explosion rocked a Massachusetts animal hospital before a fire erupted, but a veterinarian has saved most of the dogs by busting open their kennel so they could run out.

There are no reports of injuries to people.

Fire Chief John Farrington says about 12 dogs were rescued from the Cape Cod Animal Hospital but a few animals are missing. He doesn't know how many were in the building in Barnstable, about 5 miles north of the Kennedy family's Hyannis Port home.

Neighbor Ken Lacasse tells the Cape Cod Times vet Scott Munson broke the kennel door with a cinder block.

Firefighters say Monday night's explosion came 20 minutes after area residents reported their lights had dimmed. Investigators are trying to determine if natural gas caused the blast.

Representatives of the National Grid utility rushed to the scene. So did people trying to find their pets.

This happend relatively close to me. Maybe we could spare some prayers for those that were affected by this fire?

From the news reports the vet busted through the door and just started to release all the animals to get them out ASAP. Other neighbors were catching the loose animals. I heard 1 dog and 3 cats did die.

How sad but how fortunate that the vet took the action that he did. I hope they're able to locate the missing animals.

Those animals must of been so scared.  What a brave thing the vet did trying to save them.

Like Lori, my first thot was how scared they must be -- I mean you're probably already at the vet's cos you don't feel well and then everything blows up.  Prayer not just for humans and those injured, but for calmness and confidence for those hurt/sick animals to allow themselves to be found.  How sad.

I'm in MA, too, so I saw on the news this morning.  So sad, but what a dedicated vet.  Not easy to stick around a burning building to do that.

That's what I was thinking, too. I'm not sure many vets, or anyone in general, would have the courage to do that.
