Today, Mike's speech is a lot better. The catheter and "other" tube are gone, and he is using a bedpan. He still hasn't enough strength to sit and stand, but the nurse said that PT might put him in a hoyer lift to get him up and sitting in a chair. I'm going to call and speak to them tomorrow so I know what's really going on, since he doesn't remember everything. (Although he did remember where I went tonight and why I wasn't there...) He constantly tells me how much he wants to come home and how much he loves me. He puts up with anything they do, and doesn't complain much (except to me, his little Pibble). I'm taking Sioux with me tomorrow to see him, and he's all excited to finally be able to see her again - no dogs in CCU, but now that he's on a regular floor, she can go. I'm sure she'll be beside her little doggy self to see him, too. I think when we ALL get to Heaven, I will be standing in line behind Dancer and Sioux when it comes to Mike. He adored Dance, and he loves the "Dubbadog" just as much.
I think it's a blessing that he doesn't seem to have a concept of how dire his situation is - just wants to reach that goal of getting home. Maybe he will surprise everyone again. I know that if the famous idog vibes are any indication, he may have a few miles in him yet. I just hope that it might be enough to get him transplantable.
You know, even if this does not work out as I hope, there is one thing that all of you can do to help people like us. I hope that you will consider, if you haven't already done so, becoming an organ donor. In states where there are more donors, people like Mike would already have been transplant candidates long before this. To learn more: http://www.organdonor.gov/
