GOOD NEWS- the second set of Gingerbread's bloodwork came back totally normal! Thank you for all your prayers and good thoughts!! His platelets were 82 the first time and 411 the second time! His vet thinks it was possibly human error the first time. He called and talked to the lab tech, asking them to pay special attention to the platelets with the second set of bloodwork.

So the strange thing is that Gingerbread has not had any water for the last 48 hours or so. He went from drinking a little, to none at all. He's eating only canned food, so he's getting some moisture that way. I also started putting some water in with his canned. The vet said that he doesn't think Gingerbread will let himself get dehydrated and to just monitor him by making sure his gums are moist, but not sticky. I'm having a hard time with that- how can you really tell? When I pull back the skin on his scruff and let go, it goes right back to normal.

Edited to add, it's still hit and miss with him eating. This morning he ate about one bite of his canned food. :( He goes in on Monday morning for a test to see if he has Addison's disease. That isn't good, but it would be MUCH better than an autoimmune disease.

Oh Tamara...I am so sorry!  I KNOW how worried you must be. Anything at all going wrong scares me with my kids...and Bubby is my kid too!

Yes...try to NOT think the worst.  Health care now a days is so good.. so managable!   Hang in there and keep the faith....we will be praying for Gingerbread and you guys too.

I'm glad that Gingerbreads platelets were normal the second go around.  I hope the addisons test  goes well too.

As for the gums, they should feel almost slick, and not tacky.  If you tap your finger against his gums they should not stick or feel tacky at all.

Geez for some reason I missed your last post....I'm glad things are looking up!

Tamara, I'm glad gingerbread's platlets are better. I just wanted to throw out there that it may be a good idea to separate gingerbread and fudge untill the cause is found just incase it's infectious in etiology :) Sometimes infections can cause a transient drop in platelets or a bump for that matter. They are a systemic sign of inflammation too in addition to clotting blood. Good luck!

I am glad to see that the second platelet count has ruled out an autoimmnune disease and hope that the Addison's disease test turns out giving you good news too. To entice Gingerbread to drink a little more in the meantime, you could perhaps add a little something to his water (I am thinking along the lines of a couple of tablespoons of low sodium chicken broth or some pedyalite) and present him with his "spiked up" water at regular intervals.

I'm keeping both the little guy and you in my thougths.

I hope everything goes well and that Gingerbread gets some good water in him soon (water power!).

Me and Harley send our thoughts and love - hope he gets good news for the second test.

I just saw your last post and glad it was good news, but still worried about the eating and drinking.   The idea with the broth is a good idea, anything to get liquid in her. Still keeping our paws crossed.     Right Hug

Thank you Lori! Thank you everyone else too! I REALLY appreciate the support and prayers here. It makes me feel so good that there are people here who care about us. :)

So I have a small update on Gingerbread. I was able to get him to drink a tiny bit of water twice tonight- once by mixing a tiny, tiny bit of koolaid with water and the other time mixing chicken broth with water. I don't know what to do with this little guy. Worrying about him has sent my stress level pretty high. He means everything to me, so the thought of losing him is about enough to do me in! I'm crossing my fingers that the Addison's test will come back negative and that I just have a dog who became extremely picky overnight.

I'm just seeing this (I don't have much time for the forum).  Sending good vibes your way.  Hopefully, this is a temporary thing.  For what it's worth, my tzu does not drink much either--I do add water and/or broth to all his meals.  It seems that this came on quickly---have you had any significant changes to your lives, of late?   Sometimes that will put a dog off his appetite and normal routine.  Either way, try to think only positive thoughts, and not to stress out too much.  Again, sending good vibes your way----extra hugs for the Gingerbread boy.

Gingerbread is in my prayers.  I know how you feel and I will say a prayer for both of you.
