Positive thoughts, please

    Positive thoughts, please

I've just come from the hospital where DH is awaiting emergency orthopedic surgery - he had an accident with a table saw tonight and damaged 3 fingers on his left hand.  It is very likely they will amputate part of the index finger as there is no bone left to be saved beyon the first knuckle.  There was bone damage to the middle and ring fingers, but much less so I'm hoping they can repair without losing anything on those.  Tendons are intact and tests indicate little loss of sensitivity except on the part of the index finger that is likely already a loss.

Thanks for any positive energy focused on a successful surgery and infection control.

On top of it all, Pofi smells like a dead fish (our dog walker took them to the river today) and I don't know when I'll manage to bathe him!

Pofi, I'm sorry to hear this. My Dad had the same accident a year ago in May. Your DH's injuries sound almost the same too. My Dad did really well and I'm sure your DH will too. Prayers and thoughts sent. Make sure that your DH does *EXACTLY* as the surgeon says during the whole recovery and healing time.

You've got prayers and good thots from here -- such accidents happen SO easily and so fast.  (I come from a whole family of "handimen" and my Dad is a woodcarver.)

A few years ago I nearly sliced off my own finger boning a chicken.  At the time my big fear was contamination from the chicken, but I nicked the tendon and a few nerves.  I had a "fizzy finger" for a long long time -- but that *has* diminished over time and with use.  The tough part is that we tend to treat body parts differently after an inury.  I can't second strongly enough what danehaven says -- therapy ... even on fingers ... is so important afterwards to regain use of them.

Just the trauma to the body -- he's gonna be MAJORLY sore today even up into his shoulder.

Do you happen to have any arnica (the homeopathic arnica).  If you have a health store near you open today you might get him just one vial (and not the 'strong' one -- just the regular dark blue Boiron tube is best).  Have him put 3-4 beads under his tongue three or four times a day for the next few days.

It really will help speed healing and help his body cope with the trauma.  They don't taste bad (just a bit sweet) -- really does help the body heal better. It's not 'medicine' - it won't clash with anything the doctor has given him -- it just helps healing take place.

Arnica montana is one of those things you keep in your first aid kit -- it's always a good thing to reach for any time there is 'trauma' in the body.  From a sprained ankle to an injury or surgery.

I forgot about the arnica. There also will be an emotional "loss" issue sometime down the road which I'm not sure my dad has acknowledged yet.

Thanks so much, Callie and Dane!  They did pull him into an exploratory surgery about 1 am this morning and irrigated and cleaned up everything and loosely stitched all fingers back together - they say the middle finger and ring fingers looked really good. Jury is still out on the index finger, we'll know in a couple of days if the still want to remove part of it.

He's very, very upset with himself - he's just so focused on how this impacts all of his home improvement plans, especially finishing the permanent fence.

I think the Co-op is open today till early afternoon - I will definitely go get the arnica. Thanks for the advice and support!

Good thoughts for a speedy recovery for him coming your way.

Oh wow.  Many prayers from our gang.  Nothing like waking up from surgery and having them announce they have possibly saved a body part.

I wish I had known about the arnica a couple years ago - great tip Callie!  I will get some for when Patrick goes in for carpal tunnel surgery later this month, for sure.

    Best wishes to DH, Lisa!

I hope the news is good today for your husband.  I know my husband would be the exact same way worrying about how he was going to get some project done now.  I usually say "well, we could just hire someone to do it" but he never thinks they'd do as good of a job, and he's probably right.

Sending healing thoughts.  My husband is a woodworker, too, and those table saws are scarey things to me!

Hope everything goes well for your DH.

Sending healing vibes and prayers for both of you.

Thanks for all the good thoughts - it really helped my mental state.

The first post surgical visit (a week after the accident) was a shocker for DH.  When they finally got all that gauze off after soaking and he saw those traumatized, swollen, wounded fingers, he looked as if he would faint.  To me, compared the the ripped apart things he first presented me with, they looked pretty good.  I think it was just easy for him to imagine they had gone back to normal when they were hidden away.

But we soaked per instructions and re-wrapped twice a day and one week later the doc was stunned at the improvement.  I had been saying the same, that they looked wildly better, but it wasn't real for DH until the doctor said so as soon as he crossed the threshold of the exam room.  He thought it had been 2 weeks since our last visit, so significant was the improvement in appearance.  No guarantees yet, but the doc was cautiously optomistic there would be no amputation in the future.

So, knock on wood (ok, that's a bad pun following a wood working accident), he'll be back to his project list in a few months.  X-rays to see how the worst bone damage is shaping up in two weeks.

Lisa Marie!  I just saw this.  I'm coming out of my fog.  I'm sending positive vibes & Aspen, Grady & Molly are sending healing kisses.

Glad to hear the good news!

My brother had an accident involving a table saw at age 17 - cut 3 fingers (one almost off) and tore a nail off completely.  It was gross.  When he came home two days later and had his wrapped hand/arm elevated when at the dining room table, all I could think was that the tip of the one finger I could see was only being held on by some stitches and I thought I was going to toss my cookies.  Not pretty.  I was 15 at the time.

Thanks for the continued support and good vibes - must be helping as he is healing so quickly and beating the odds!!

Annie - don't think twice about it - like I said he's still healing and your good thoughts will help him along the way - and the kisses from sweet Molly will go a long way, too.  Ken is a sucker for pretty girly dog faces like hers!!

Tina - seems there's quite a few at i-dog who can relate to the feeling in my stomach when he came running in the house holding up his injured hand and apologizing - it was pretty grusome, but those classic maternal, take care of this sensibilities kicked in and got me through it!  Most definitely "not pretty" though!
