Prayer for Odie

    Prayer for Odie

I just spoke to my FIL... he's taking Odie (a 14 y/o pekingese) to see the vet at 4 because he's noticed some blood in his bowel movements.  The vet said it didn't sound good and I know what my FIL is thinking... that the vet is going to tell him something horrible and that he'll have to make a decision that none of us want to even think about.  He really hasn't had a lot of problems other than a back issue that acts up every now and then.

Odie was a life saver to my FIL.  His wife (my DH's mom) was killed, he felt he had nothing to live for.  I don't know when/how/why he decided to get a puppy but he did... and it was the best thing in the world for him.  It gave him a reason to get up in the mornings, had to take care of the puppy even if he didn't feel like taking care of himself.  So for those of you who read this... please send good vibes Odie's way.   He's a good little boy...

Missy, I saw your other post in the health section but there's so many things that can cause blood in the stool it's best not to speculate and see what the vet says. I'll say a prayer for Odie and your father -in -law; keep us updated.

Thanks Janice.  I believe he is always thinking the worst scenario since we lost FeFe.  Then when my parents lost Brownie recently, it kind of scared him even more.  They were all young pups, playing together and now Odie is the only one left.  Doesn't seem right.  I'll update as soon as I know anything.  Praying that it's nothing to be worried about.

Oh Missy, I'm so sorry and I hope that it's not serious.  Still at 14, you just can't help but worry.  When my mom died, my dad didn't handle it well either.  He was already quiet and melancholy, and it just got worse.  He let me get a puppy, a cocker mix, but that dog was truly his from the beginning and it brought a light back to my dad's eyes.  I know how you must be worried about both Odie and your FIL, and I will keep all of you in my thoughts and prayers.

Missy, sending good wishes to Odie and to your FIL.  I'm sure he's thinking the worst -- it's understandable considering the recent situations with FeFe and Brownie, as well as Odie's age, etc.  And since Odie is a huge source of joy for your FIL, I know how worried he must be (we've been there, right?!).

Here's hoping that it's just a temporary intestinal thing like we've seen other forum dogs experiencing lately, or maybe just a reaction to something Odie ate.  Keep us posted and we'll keep thinking good thoughts!  [sm=crossfingers.gif]

P.S. -- I absolutely LOVE your new signature line!  The photos are precious, and I really love Fe at "center stage" in her bathing costume!![sm=floating.gif]

Thanks Cathy, Lori (and Willow!), Annie and Tracy for the prayers & good thoughts for Odie & my FIL.

At the moment, the vet thinks it is irritable bowel syndrome... they're supposed to feed him boiled chicken & rice and keep a close eye on him and bring him in if they notice anything.  They also looked at his back since he was shaking (almost like a constant shivering as if he's cold) and his xray shows his spine is fused together in places and he's shivering because he's in pain.  He was given meds to ease the pain.

I believe it's always on his mind... the worry of what he'll do if/when the day comes and none of us want to even think about that (but it still creeps into our thoughts anyway).  FIL was with me at Virginia Tech when Fe had her 2nd opinion... and I know he's thinking he doesn't know what he'll do when that time comes with Odie.  I tried to be upbeat before he left but hearing him cry makes me start too.  So keep the good thoughts coming his way that it really is just IBS and that he'll be back to normal in no time.  Seems like there's a lot of this going around lately... makes me wonder.

Tracy... I can't take the credit for my signature line... Kelly (sooner) made it for me (she made more for others on the board too - very cute!).  I think she did a great job with it... and I loved dressing Fe up (she liked it too) -- she'd trot around like she knew everyone was getting a kick out of her outfits.  Makes me smile seeing her in that 'kini' [:D]

I truly hope it's nothing more serious than IBS.  That'd be great news.  It also sounds like it was good that the discovered the cause of the shaking and can now treat the pain.  Odie sounds like a real trooper and it's nice to know that your FIL won't have to deal with a loss right now and can have a happy Father's Day.  I'll continue to keep Odie in my thoughts and prayers.

We're hoping the same thing... that it's nothing more serious.  From what FIL said, he's been sleeping a lot since last week, I suppose it's because of his medication.  Odie's a tough, toothless wonder [;)]  It never ceases to amaze me how much joy animals bring to our lives and how helpless we feel when something is or might be wrong.  It's like panic mode sets in.  Thank you for continuing to pray for him.  I'll have to find a pic to post on here so you guys can see him... he's cute as a button.
