Brando is having surgery on the 3rd UPDATE

    • Gold Top Dog
Sending all the best wishes and good vibes for wee Brando.  And, strong supportive thoughts for you, too, Deb, as you face the worry about surgery and post-op care.  I know how anxious and down-right hysterical I was about Tonka's surgerical procedures -- it's so scary.  It's great to do all the best research, which we tried to do, but sometimes knowing so much only makes you worry more about all kinds of things less-informed people don't even think about!

A friend of ours had to face that surgery with their Springer several years ago.  The hardest part was keeping him inactive for the timeframe needed for healing.  And he had separation anxiety, so to contain him in a crate without being with his other dog family made him crazy.  He had to be mildly sedated quite often.  The good thing for you is that Brando is so small and you can handle and carry him easily as needed.  It's so much harder with a larger, heavier dog when you have to limit weight on their legs and whatnot.

Keep us posted, and we'll keep our good vibes going!

I'll definitely be thinking about Brando tomorrow and saying prayers that the surgery goes well.  I completely understand how anxious you must be, but I think the waiting and worrying is always the hardest part.  Tomorrow begins the journey to Brando feeling healthy and happy again [:)]

I know you're right I've been telling Joe all along we need to make sure she gets attention, she is very unassuming, not like Brando.
I will be very mindful of thanks for the reminder. But you can't have her Annie.
I wrote an update in the original msg like a duh! he is out of surgery and it went well there was no extensive damage so it was easy to fix. I can pick him up at 5:15 My poor little dude.
Thanks again guys for all of the prayers and well wishes.
Now we could use a few that the pain is controlled and then that we can keep the little pain in the butt still for 8wks.
AAAAGGGGHHH  I really glad it's over though.

Deb - I'm thrilled to hear that the surgery is over and there was no extensive damage.  I know I'd be worried too about the pain management, but hopefully it won't be a problem.  I know that keeping him calm and quiet for 8 wks will be tough too, but he's lucky to have you watching over him.  I can't wait to hear about how he's doing once the recovery period's over [:)]

YAY FOR BRANDO!  Whew... what a relief!  I have to agree, keeping him still is gonna be the hardest!  At least the hard part of waiting is over!

    Hi guys,
Boy he is so out of it, but I guess that's a good thing. If the pain were terrible I guess he wouldn't be. He got up once and turned from lying on his bad leg to his good one. He hasn't drunk or eaten anything though and he hasn't gone out, but if he had stayed at the vet's I guess he wouldn't have. I made some chicken broth and brown rice and small bits of chicken and put water in his crate ,If he should get up I will try  and syringe some water, I'm sure his throat is dry. I am just going to leave him alone for tonight. Thanks so much for the support and prayers, this is really heartbreaking.
The vet told Joe that the surgeon made  him walk around and when he saw how he was walking that Brando is the most stoic dog he's ever seen, because the way that knee was out he had to be in pain every day all day. I've heard this about Brando w/ every doctor that has seen him.

I have a friend who just last week had the same surgery done on her dog.  She's opted to get him physical therapy.  Wiley's problem was that he had hip surgery and then post-surgery they never gave him ANY therapy and never got him walking on 4 legs.  So the bad leg healed badly and then he developed cruciate ligament problems.  When they did his surgery they actually had to form a new knee joint so getting him to USE the weak leg was a big huge deal.

She found a place that does hydrotherapy and is super pleased with his progress thus far.

Am sending good thots and many prayers for you guys.

So glad to hear that little Brando is home where he'll be comfortable and doted on!  I remember when Tonka had his surgery, I felt like there were 2 parts of my anxiety -- the worst was the panic while he was under anesthesia, so there was great relief when he came home.  But then there was terrible worry as we saw how out of it was and had to treat his incision for infection over the course of another week.  At least when they're home, you can relax a bit, knowing he's not lying in a vet's kennel with strange smells and sounds around him.

Good boy Brando!  You've got the scary part behind you - now you have to do what Mom and Dad say, even if it means having to be very, very mellow for a lot of weeks.  You'll be feeling so much better soon!
