    Husband Surgery update

    Hi Guys!
Went to visit DH today, he's doing pretty good...surprisingly well actually. They came in to ask him if he needed pain medicine and he said "no!" I can't believe that! He got up and walked to the bathroom while I was there also. BUT he has 101 fever,,I'm kind of worried. I am afraid of infection,,,but I think I remember having a fever for a couple of days after surgery though. Tried to ask the nurse how unusual that is after surgery. She did say that your body is fighting everything including drugs,,,the shock to its system, etc etc.  I hope so.
My BIL had major heart surgery years ago... came thru it amazingly well, and ended up with a fever that wouldn't go away,,,and it ended up being a staph infection....THAT scares me!  You know,,,he eventually died after that without really ever getting better.

Dyan, I don't want to keep piping in like a know-it-all [:@], but my friend who had back surgery in November, also spiked a fever one day post-op.  They did some bloodwork to be cautious, but she was okay.  She did say she felt flu-like symptoms for a few days, but who knows if that's the surgery/anesthesia or truly a bug.  She was fine a day or so after going home though, so hopefully it's something similar for your DH.  I just read something about post-op infections and if I remember right, they aren't as concerned with early onset temp rises, but when it's 4-5 days out, they suspect wound infection.  Not sure on that, but thought I'd mention it.

It sounds like he's doing great to be able to pass on pain meds, so I'd see that as a positive sign.  I hope things continue to go smoothly and there's no further concern about infections.

    Thank you Callie!
Cathy,,,PLEASE don't think anyone thinks your piping in like a know-it-all!  I am looking for help, information and good words...so thank you for piping in!!!
Just before I came here I went into SEARCH and your right about the fact that a fever in the first 48 hours is usually not a worry. The website I read (from Cleveland Clinic) said the percentage of fevers in the first few days was something really high,,,and they don't require anything but observation at that time. Fevers starting 4 or 5 days,,, are more likely to be infection, and have to be investigated.
Feeling a bit better about it.  Need to get some sleep tonight,,, I am having a relapse of my cold/flu bug or what ever it is that has had me since Jan 2, so I'm glad that I feel not as worrysome about the fever thing....
Thanks for the report on your friend also Cathy. DH didn't say he felt anything but warm...but also the room was warm and even the man in the next bed had ice on his head last night I guess.   The nurse turned the heat down in the room while I was there,,,,,it was set at about 5 degrees warmer than we set ours.

Dyan, I'm glad to hear your DH is feeling well enough to decline pain meds.  That's a great sign.  I remember a friend of mine having a fever after a major surgery that really concerned her spouse, but it was fine 2 or 3 days later.  Sending good vibes that he's on his way to a smooth recovery and that you're both feeling rested and stronger each day!

    Thank you Janice!

He just called...they sent him down for stand up ex-rays,,,,the doctor will be in to read them tomorrow morning, and if all is well, he might come home. So we'll see.

    He's home,,,he's home!!!
Thanks for everyones good wishes!  He came home late morning,,,feeling pretty good but tired. Came home and sat at the kitchen table eating stuffed peppers and mashed potatoes that I had made for Sunday,,,,  oh well,,,so I figure out something else to make.
You know,,its really strange...I did get the prescription for pain filled for him, but he hasn't taken anything for pain past the first day. I can't imagine.  Makes me think the pain he was in before the surgery was so bad that he doesn't feel much now.
Now we are to hope and pray that he heals fine and that nothing moves in there......

Dyan that is awesome that he doesn't feel the need to take pain meds!!  I can't imagine the pain he must have had before surgery.  Continued prayers going out to both of you!!  BTW, couldn't help but laugh when you said he ate the stuffed peppers and mashed potatoes you made for Sunday [:D].  Just like a man!  But this one has a valid excuse!

    Yeah !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  [:)] [:)] [:)]

So glad he's finally home.  I guess after hospital food, I would eat your stuffed peppers and potatoes, too!!  Glad he had something "real" to eat, even tho it was what you had cooked for tomorrow!  There's no food that's as good as home-cooked.   Yeah, he's home!!

Yes, it IS awesome!  Hope it continues...but I just can't imagine. A friend of his had pretty much the same surgery a few weeks back and STILL is taking 2 pain pills a day. I really don't get it.  Not like he's not one of those typical men "big babies!"  always crying about a pain in his arm or leg etec....I really can't believe this...but VERY happy!
Have to say, he IS very tired though!
    Janice, thanks for your prayers.
    Yeah !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  [:)] [:)] [:)]

That makes sense.  I know his condition and surgery was far more serious, but when I had my tonsils out at age 26, I was prepared for horrible post-op pain.  I came out of the recovery room greeting my aunt, who was waiting for me (albeit in a croaky voice).  I had serious discomfort, but I was like:  "Are you kidding me?  I've had chronic tonsillitis for over a year.  This post-op throat soreness is a piece of cake!"  I actually had more pain in my tongue from the way it was stretched and clamped.  One night of demoral was all it took before I ditched it for Tylenol.  So, I'll bet your husband is feeling much improvement already -- such good news!  And with home cooked food, he'll improve 100-fold now!

Yay Dyan!  I'm so glad he's home and I'm sure he is too.  I'm actually not surprised about the not wanting pain meds.  My girlfriend was the same way.  She was able to take Tylenol and do okay.  She was super tired for quite some time, but I think that's to be expected.  Is he going to get physical therapy at home?  Is he able to move around pretty good?  I'm just so happy that the surgery went well and he's on the road to recovery and I know you both must be too [:D]
