Chow prayers for Willow

Lori, is Willow a "high stress" type of dog? Amber goes on hunger strikes every few months for no particular reason, and she can't afford to lose any weight. She always does though. Amber is very high strung, always thinking, always watching, always worried. I've always attributed her hunger strikes to stress. Medically, nothing has ever been wrong with her though. What is the high white cell count due to, do they know? Hang in there - you're a hero.

    Thank you Lena!!

Deb--YES!  She's very anxious.  The vet wanted long term medication for it but I'm not ready to go there yet.  I think she's too young at this point and has too many other issues that come and go.  But, I'd say your probably right, the stress causes the not eating.

The white blood cells were low actually--they were just watching it and she hadn't had any other testing done.  At first, they put her on a course of antibiotics but that was the only treatment she had.  But, they are within normal range now and have been for the past six months or so (knock on wood).

    THANK YOU!!!

Lori, I just PM'd you before checking in on some threads, so I hadn't seen the good news of the bloodwork before I wrote you.  I'm so glad the white blood cell count was where it should be and that Willow is eating again.  I never thought about anxiety affecting eating, but it makes perfect sense.  I know that's what happens to me when my nerves are really in overdrive - I get such a nervous stomach that I have no appetite.  I guess as long as it cycles back to a regular eating pattern again, it's probably okay. But I'm sure you could do without the worry of her rollercoaster appetite!  Hey Willow, it's good for your bones to stay fit and trim, but don't take that unusual diet plan too far!

It's definitely a true compliment to be asked about taking the other dog.  The people who have seen the level of commitment you've shown Willow know that means you have special qualities as a dog parent!  It's hard to hear about those opportunities though -- your heart wants to help the dog, but your head knows it's not right for you at the time.  We've had that experience.  If I let my heart decide, we'd have dozens of animals!

Lori, I am so glad to hear Willows tests went well....I know first hand how it feels to get great news from the vet...
Willow is such a sweet dog...
You are a great puppy mom and that's why the Chows keep coming your way...

Talus sends Willow big hugs and kisses and wants her to eat well...
(Sorry I'm so late for this thread, I've been crazy at work)

Lor, what's going on w/our girl?
    • Gold Top Dog
She's doing good, Deb.  The tests were normal.  She's eating OK, we've been hiking every other morning or so--she's good, best she's ever been actually.
    THANKS!

That's a great story. . . your very lucky to have a landlady who is not only OK with pets but helps get them too.  The lady we rent from is like that too.

How sad your poor dog had that seizure and what in the world was a tech doing prescribing medication??  That would of made me pause a second. . .but when your stressed and worried you don't think straight, I know.

Anyway, I'm glad the dog is doing well now and your great for taking her in and taking such wonderful care of her.  Chows are sometimes hard to place because they've got that "vicious" dog rep.  If only most people knew what a "front" it all was.  Willow is afraid of our mailbox. . .LOL!

Willow is also doing well.  She's busy "helping" (more like sticking her nose in all the gifts) me wrap.  And,  you're right, I can't imagine owning any other breed at this point.

    Happy Holidays.

I live in a small town in wyoming it is very comman practice we are not big cities were they have vets all the time I dont blame her she was trying to help
    • Gold Top Dog
Well, hopefully she contacted an actual vet before giving you that medication.  Otherwise, small town or not, she did the wrong thing since techs are not allowed to prescribe medication.
    • Puppy
