Prayer request for my friend

    Prayer request for my friend

My best friend, Sharon, is having surgery on her back tomorrow and I'd like to ask that anyone who reads this say a little prayer that all goes well.  She's like a sister to me, and I'm really worried about the outcome.  She's been in horrible pain since January and has become quite worn down both mentally and physically.  We've been best friends for about 35 years and I can't even imagine what I'd do if anything happened to her.

I hope the surgery goes well for your friend, that her recovery is a smooth one, and that the end result is an end to her chronic pain.  I have a couple friends who've had to deal with that type of pain, and it definitely has an emotional/psychological affect as well as a physical one.  I'm sure her recovery will be helped by having the support of such a dear friend by her side.  If you live near her, you'll be able to provide all kinds of valuable support.  One of my oldest and dearest friends had to face a cancer surgery a couple years ago, and it upset me greatly to be 3,000 miles away, unable to do anything other than call or write.

Sending good thoughts and wishes her way!

Thanks everyone.  Her daughter just called to say she's out of surgery - whew!  I think I'd been holding my breath all morning.  Unfortunately, she lives in Florida now, so I couldn't be with her and it's been really tough to be so far away.  I'd been really strong the last couple weeks and telling her everything would be just fine.  When we got off the phone last night though, I just fell apart and have been a wreck ever since.  I'm so glad she's out of surgery.  Now I just pray that it was successful and she'll be able to enjoy life again.

I'm just reading this Cathy, and I'm glad that you already know your friend came thru the surgery okay.  Thats a relief.   I also hope that it will be a success for her. I understand the worry. My husband has been doctoring this summer with his back, and two doctors that he went to both say surgery will be the only answer. They must fuse 3 disks together.  He is worried about it and the outcome..so right now he is trying nerve blocks.  I hope this works, but I don't have much faith. I too am afraid for him. I understand the worry that you feel for your friend.
    Please keep us updated!

Thanks Dyan.  I thought about your husband because I knew he was going thru the same type of back trouble.  Sharon went thru PT, chiropractor, and the epidural, and none helped.  It's been such a long struggle and she's grown so depressed.  Just trying to run an errand like going to Walmart has been impossible.  She has 2 new granddaughters and hasn't been able to spend much time with them either.  The surgeon said he thought he could just do a discectomy, but the surgery went longer than expected so I'm not sure what they did now.  I spoke to her briefly this afternoon and she's been nauseated and vomiting most of the day.  They took her off the morphine but also haven't given her any food or liquids, again, because of the nausea.  She's also running a slight fever, so they took a chest xray this afternoon.  She's not a happy camper right now but I hope and pray that this will be end to her pain and she will  get back to enjoying life.  My 50th BD is in April and I have a trip to Vegas for the two of us planned [:)].
I feel for your husband and I hope that he can find some relief without the surgery, but if that's what will get him back on the road to health, then I hope that it goes smoothly.  I know you'll take great care of him.

I'm coming to this a little late Cathy, but I hope things continue to go well for your friend.  Surgery is scary and we always tend to imagine the worst.

Cathy, I just spoke to my friend Diane who just had a knee replacement. She said she was miserable in the hospital for 3 days because of nausea  and they realized as soon as they took her off the pain medication she got better. AND she also found that she didn't need that strong pain medication either. Make me think that I want to remember that fact. I remember after having my first baby they have me some kind of pain medication that made me sick,,,I stopped it right away,,took tylonal after that.
They always say the first couple of days after surgery is the worst, hopefully by the time you talk to your friend next, she is already feeling well and happy that its over.

You're absolutely right Dyan.  They stopped the morphine about 24 hours ago and Sharon is doing soooo much better.  She's been able to eat today and get up and walk a few times.  Her husband is on his way there to pick her up and take her home.  She sounded wonderful and says she has some pain but actually not as much as she expected.  The surgeon told her that her nerve was completely pinched off by the bulging disc and it was the worst case he'd ever seen (do you think they always say that?).  Anyway, I couldn't be more thrilled [sm=dance.gif]
