Puppyluvr -- I've had several dogs (because we adopted them for THAT reason) who had ear problems -- one had the bilateral ear ablation surgerys (both ears).
Has the vet done a culture and sensitivity test? They aren't cheap -- about $100 BUT that will tell you much .. it will tell you what antibiotic will and won't work, it will tell you if it is specifically bacterial or yeast. Vets ... particularly if they think they are trying to save you money ... can let ear infections linger WAY too long and it ultimately costs way more money.
Can you tell me exactly what they have done and what has been diagnosed? What are the state of the ears??
See, what happens is that when there is deep bacterial infections, or when infections have gone on for year after year, then the tissue in the ear canal ossifies -- that literally means that it turns to bone. When that happens, you can't get the swelling to go away. The blood vessels get starved because blood can't pass thru the boney substance so the ear literally putrefies from the inside.
There are a LOT of things you can do -- if you want to email me I'm glad to help you. I have 'been there done that' with ear infections -- sometimes there are short cuts ... there are other things you can do to help reduce the ifnection risk. And I've done it on a low budget too -- there's no sin in being strapped financially -- most of us have been there at times.
When you say surgery -- what surgery are you talking about? The Zepp procedure or the ear ablations?? The Zepp is where they cut down into the ear canal to try to 'widen' it. That one doesn't have a great success rate.
If you can email me I'll do my best to help you. Callie
