Prayers needed for my Mom

Hi, Marty-My mom is also pretty far away from me, but my sister lives in the same town. She does a huge amount for her, but can't stay with her during the day. My mother refuses to wear a call-bracelet, but having next-door neighbors that check in on her often is very helpful. Are their any close neighbors whose help you and your brother could solicit?

Sorry to hear about your mom, healing prayers are heading her way. They are doing great things with hip surgeries these days and she should be fine.

Take a deep breath, you surely have your share of worries this week, huh? Prayers for peace of mind are on the way for you.

She came through the surgery this morning just fine.  Now comes the hard part...to get back on her feet again.  Thanks for all the prayers and kind words!

Sorry I missed the update, but so glad that surgery went well.  OK, here come the "ON YOUR FEET MOM" vibes.......

It must be in the wind ... my mother had eye surgery today and surgery earlier this summer (arterial surgery).  It's scarey when we get so faced with how incredibly 'mortal' our parents are.  Marty, I'll be continuing to lift your Mom (and your family) up -- this sort of thing has a trickledown effect on everyone.  Like you, my folks are in western NY and I"m in FL.  *sigh*

Marty, sorry, I came to this a little late but my thoughts & wishes are with you.  I'm sending good healing vibes for your mom & steady vibes for you.

Marty, your mom will likely go to rehab after this, but when she is ready for discharge, call your local ASAP (Aging Services Access Point) or AAA (Area Agency on Aging) [linkhttp://www.n4a.org]www.n4a.org[/link]  in MA.  Because of a recent change in the eligibility standards, some elders are able to access a program called Community Choices which provides quite a bit of service, including Lifeline units, homemaking, personal care, adaptive equipment, adult day care, etc.  It may help keep her out of nursing home care if she would rather live independently at home.  If you need any info, PM me - my day job is with an ASAP.

Thanks Anne, that is good to know about.  I know she is determined to go back home, and will do whatever it takes!  My sister is an LPN in a nursing home and will be taking her vacation time to help out, but that is probably only a few weeks.  She may be aware of the help available, but I will certainly mention it to her.  I know the Fallon Clinic provided a lot of help for my Dad when he was sick, too.  I will PM you if needed...thanks for the offer!

I talked to her this morning, and she sounded much better today, but she sure is going to miss playing with her garden this year...

Oh, I just spent most of the afternoon researching those medic alert bracelets...would you know which one is generally considered the most reliable?

**** Keep em coming please....my sis just called.  Mom has had trouble putting weight on her leg and is in a lot of pain.  They took Xrays yesterday, and she has another fracture.  Don't know much yet, but there will be another surgery....

Marty - I'm real sorry to hear about the need for a second surgery.  I'm sure you know best, but you might want to think about going to visit her before that or right after.  When my dad had to have some bowel surgery I was living in Germany (Air Force spouse) and the surgery went fine.  A couple days later, he developed an infection and they needed to take him back in for more surgery.  His Dr. said he was very depressed and they worried about him recovering from a 2nd surgery.  They suggested I fly home immediately and I did.  My sister lived there and my brother also drove down, so we were all there.  My dad came thru it fantastic and the Dr. said he thought that our presence gave him a much needed uplift to his spirit.  Anyway - just a thought and I hope she does great with the surgery.

p.s. When I was looking into the medic alert bracelet for my dad, I actually called the local fire department where he lived and asked if they could recommend any.  They were very helpful and gave me some advice on what to look for.  They suggested one that would've notified the fire dept if my dad was injured and also would've told them where the lockbox was and the combination, so they wouldn't have to break down the door.  I hadn't even considered that until I spoke to them.
