Vibes for Bugsy's surgery and my nerves LOL

I'm sorry I didn't see this earlier but you and Bugsy have never been off my mind. I'll be praying for the surgery to be a complete success and for you to feel peace and clarity in your decision. Cyber hugs for both you and Bugsy.

    Thank you again all!

    36 hrs now!

He had a rough day yesterday but seemed better today. Dogs amaze me with their inherent happiness :)

I am just continuing to pray that this is going to fix this for good!

I've jsut gotta ditto what Julie said above -- you ARE his best advocate (and there is NONE better, Karen!!).

I'm cracking up about standing on the surgery leg to pee -- I mean either you're a left legged pee'r or a right legged one .. I mean when a dog's gotta go he's GOTTA go -- there are certain things that just can't change!!

It was a busy weekend so I haven't been on much but you & Bugsy have been on my heart and WILL be.  Not just on "the" day but that it truly fixes it and does what it *should* do.  *hugs* Karen!!

((( Karen ))); we didn't have internet access for several days so I'm just seeing this. Sending vibes that the surgery will go perfectly and that it will be exactly what he needs. We will all be with you and Bugsy tomorrow in our thoughts.

Karen asked me to give a quick update.  The frickin bulb on the monitor blew out so the surgery has to be postponed.  She'll pick Bugsy up in a little while and see when she can get the surgery scheduled again.   Absolutely unbelievable bad luck for the bulb to blow but I guess it's better than it going out during the procedure.

ETA-monitor bulb, not the scope as I first posted.

Thank you again, all. Yes it is insanely stressful. He is still flippy and under the influence of the drugs. I cannot believe I have to watch this again. I have rescheduled for Friday :(

Karen - At times like this, I try to tell myself everything happens for a reason. Sometimes it's just an attempt to make myself feel better but sometimes it proves to be true. I'm sorry that you've had to go through all this stress only to have the surgery cancelled, but I hope we'll all be celebrating on Friday.

Ugh. I just can't even believe that hapoened today! What did they have to say about it?

as if my stress levels needed to increase - he still isn't right...........I haven't cried yet but its not long off

Basically they said the monitor was in use Friday and was fine. They don't do surgery on Mondays so today was the next use. I wouldn't imagine its too common for a normal vets practice to have more than one of them - they are a specialist medical grade item only used with the arthroscope.

The vet is/was super apologetic and has ordered one to be overnighted. As furious as I was at different times what can one do?  Things break.

I feel really really helpless right now because I am having to see him struggle coming out of the anesthesia and I am supposed to do this to him again on Friday???

I swear my life is never straightforward

I am sure it will take at least a day to get back to normal. A friend of mines dog just had surgery the other day to remove eye lashes and he was totally in outer space the entire day. She said he would get up then just stand there wobbling like what was I trying to do? Then she would say hey, lie down, he would lie down and go back to sleep. So, give it time. This other dog was back to normal the next day.

    .

Karen MAKE SURE they know this -- it sounds to me like they need to use a different sedative/anesthesia combo on Bugs -- they are NOT all equal and he IS a mix.  You might want to troll around on some breed specific boards (Isn't he supposed to be part lab/part dane??) and SEE if there is a known combo that isn't so good.

Were they supposed to keep him over night???  (like I'm wondering if they deliberately keep them groggy if there is not a lot of staff on over-night???  that wouldn't thrill me to my tippy toes).

I know years ago when Foxy had his peri-anal hernia repaired, he darned near didn't come out of the anesthesia (very like what you're talking about) -- and that was back when other stuff was used and they found out that shelties, in particular, didn't do well with a particular sedative/anesthesia combo.  My vet made that part of his record because what he'd used should have been ok, but it was something Foxy was more sensitive to than normal.

Then again -- I have to wonder if they don't sedate them heavily because they pprobably have them pretty restrained all over to keep them from shifting during surgery on a surgery like that.  And they probably want him absolutely "out" before they start to do that.  I'm going to guess it's more sedative than anesthesia.  But just make SURE the vet knows this was *not* good coming out of it.

He may be super thirsty tomorrow .... he's had other procedures so make note of anything "unusual"

Dang Karen -- I am SO sorry ....  In honesty I wish we could all just crowd around you and help you have a little pity party.  You and B both deserve it!!
