Marquis will be leaving soon - The journey is over

Marquis is one of my MIL dogs. He is a 12 year old Irish Setter. He has been having major heart and pulmonary edema problems for the last 2 months. I have not seen him in 4 years and, at the beginning of his trouble, was hoping to see him again when we visit this summer but it will not happen. While he is medicated with everything the vet can think about and comfortable right now, it is clear he will be gone very soon. A question of days rather than weeks.

Marquis is one of the gentlest dogs I've ever met. Great with his furry family, great with people, great with kids, not so great with the chickens his people raise if they pass the fence but that's just what a dog does. He is still playing, running, smooching, and enjoying life. There is nothing to be done but to let him be himself.

I'd appreciate if you could join me in wishing him a soft and painless death. He is a good dog.

What a handsome boy.  Good thoughts for a peaceful passing after a life well lived.  I so want to kiss right between his eyes.

    Thank you.

Oh, what a beautiful, regal face!  My heart goes out to your MIL and everyone in Marquis' extended circle.  While we can cherish the days we have left with our beloved dogs when we know we'll soon say goodbye, it's still heartbreaking.  Just remembering how I felt when I knew our dog was in his final weeks still makes me teary, even 5+ years later.

Marquis, you're a lucky dog to have had a good home with someone whose touch will be what you feel as you cross the Bridge.  Peaceful crossing, handsome boy.

Marquis - you are loved.  It's good there is a bit of time for goodbyes -- for special meals and times of just getting your neck rubbed and loved on.   Good journey, my friend!

Peaceful journey Marquis.  Enjoy the rest of your time here with your family.  There is a very sweet Grandma Lab that crossed yesterday I am sure you and she will enjoy basking in the sunshine together.

    Peaceful passing vibes for Marquis!

Thank you so very much to all of you for the peaceful passing wishes and the comforting thoughts.

I think he has had a pretty good life even though their dogs are more outside dogs than inside ones. He's always had buddy doggies, good vet care, plentiful to eat, a sturdy insulated and raised house in a well built covered kennel, human companionship both outside (FIL still spends hours outside raising fowl, rabbit, and a couple of sheep and MIL gardens) and inside (all dogs come watch TV in the evenings with MIL). They love their dogs and he will be missed.

What is extra saddening to me is that the vet said that except for his heart he has zero other problems, no arthritis, no suspicious lumps, good eyesight and hearing... he might have lived several more years with very good quality of life. It also came so suddenly and went so bad so fast.

I only get news on weekends because of the time difference but there is not one day I do not think of him.
