Thank you so very much to all of you for the peaceful passing wishes and the comforting thoughts.
I think he has had a pretty good life even though their dogs are more outside dogs than inside ones. He's always had buddy doggies, good vet care, plentiful to eat, a sturdy insulated and raised house in a well built covered kennel, human companionship both outside (FIL still spends hours outside raising fowl, rabbit, and a couple of sheep and MIL gardens) and inside (all dogs come watch TV in the evenings with MIL). They love their dogs and he will be missed.
What is extra saddening to me is that the vet said that except for his heart he has zero other problems, no arthritis, no suspicious lumps, good eyesight and hearing... he might have lived several more years with very good quality of life. It also came so suddenly and went so bad so fast.
I only get news on weekends because of the time difference but there is not one day I do not think of him.
