I will definately ask about protein loss results when Willow has here blood work done this week. How old is Jessie now?  Willow is 10.  .

Jessie turned 13 last month. The protein loss is detected in the urine; a complete urinalysis is the best way to detect early kidney disease. In her blood work, Jessie's BUN and creatine are well within normal limits. The neurologist told me that kidney disease doesn't show up in the blood work until kidney function has decreased by 50%.

Wow, OK, thanks, Janice.  I'll have them do a urinalysis too.  Funny, now that I think about it I don't think they've ever done one except for the times when I've brought her in suspecting a UTI.

Hope Jessie is feeling better tonight.

My vet doesn't ask me to bring in her urine when she has her senior checkups but I started doing it about a year ago.

Jessie is doing better everyday. She was wanting a walk yesterday but we weren't sure she was ready. She started jumping on the furniture again and running in the yard, so we took her for a walk today. She's still a little unsteady at times but I never expected her to make this much progress in just a few days. I did some research and her kidney disease is very mild; categorized as stage 1. The neurologist thinks it's the cause for the high blood pressure(hers ranged from 190 to 212) because he couldn't find any other causes, but I wonder if that's the case since it's in the early stages. I'm going to ask the internist about it on Thursday.

I am so very happy for Jessie and  you that all the worst possibilities have been eliminated and that she is recovering.

Good vibes for continued progress and for her blood pressure to have come down at recheck time.

Thanks Natalie; I love your sig. Your dogs are beautiful. She responded to the blood pressure medicine while at Purdue so I'm not worried about her having high blood pressure while she's taking it. The recheck will be to see if they need to change the dose. She''s tolerating the blood pressure medicine and the ACE inhibitor very well.

Good girl Jessie - you keep getting better!! Great job Janice she's a lucky girl!!

She really is so lucky to have you Janice. I'm super happy she's doing better. At age 13, there's going to be issues to manage but you've got a great team and you're so on it, she's in great hands.

Just wanted to give a little update. She went for a recheck and her blood pressure was 134, and she was very nervous, shaking while they took it (she remembered what happened last time she was there). So, it probably would have been lower if she wasn't shaking. It had been ranging from 190 to 220 the 2 days that she was at the vet hospital. Her urine protein creatine ratio went from 2.86 to .76, and the amount of protein loss went from 2 to 1. So, she's off the Benazapril for now but still on the blood pressure medicine. She will be rechecked in 3 weeks. They're starting to think that the high blood pressure caused the problems with her kidneys instead of kidney disease causing the high blood pressure. She's more energetic on her walks than she's been for awhile, walking like she was 6 years younger, and I'm wondering if she's had high blood pressure for awhile and we didn't know it until recently. But, she also started a very low dose of thyroid supplement a few weeks ago, so it could also be because of that. Thanks again for your thoughts and prayers; love you guys!

So glad to see such a good update on Jessie and that the meds combination are working well for her. Kidneys' value being back in a better range is very good.

Yay and lots of tummy rubs for Jessie. Keepi getting better, sweetie.

Thanks for asking, and thanks you for the hugs. She's doing fine except for a slight head tilt. It may be permanent but we won't know for awhile. She's still going for long walks and doing all her normal activities. She will have another urinalysis in two weeks to see how her kidneys are doing but right now she's only on the blood pressure medication (once a day) and thyroid supplement. She's going to the vet Monday for a blood test to see if an adjustment needs to be made to the amount of thyroid medication she's getting. I'm going to have her blood pressure checked then and also when she has the urinalysis in two weeks. Thank you so much for your wonderful support.
