Technology can be such an amazing tool sometimes. There's a website for the family on CaringBridge where you read updates on their progress and people can share their thoughts:
I had hoped to read better news on Owen...
Owen's status was basically unchanged today. He wasn't permitted much alert time today because he was so agitated last night, which led him to bite through his breathing tube. As is common after a few days in the hospital, the breathing tube will be removed tomorrow, and the doctors will replace it with a tracheotomy in his neck to help him breathe for the rest of his time on the ventilator. He'll also get a feeding tube in his belly to provide his nutrition for the time being. The doctors hope to do the orthopedic surgery necessary to repair his fractured leg at the same time, although the other two procedures are higher priority for tomorrow. Both the tracheotomy and the feeding tube are for Owen's comfort and safety as his body continues to heal, and the doctors get a clearer picture of the true nature of his injuries. Right now they intend to repeat the MRI on Thursday, and hope that the new images show a clearer picture of the injury to the spinal cord.
and then this brought tears to my eyes...(Michelle is one of the paramedics at the scene of the accident and Brooke is the 10 y.o.)
One final note on today: Though she doesn't remember it, Michelle reminded her today that when she pulled Brooke out of the car, Brooke told her, "Please go help my little brother and sisters and come back for me later." A humbling moment for all of the grown-ups in the room, for sure.
