I also need to learn to control those emotions... the panic I let take over was not good, though that will likely be a lifetime work in progress.

Oh man, after reading what you were dealing with, I don't know how you could not feel overwhelmed with emotions. You did what most of us what have done and then some. I'm so sorry that you and One Ton are having to deal with this. I'll definitely have him on my mind and in my heart and pray that he can recover from this. (((Hugs))) to both of you.

Callie - I have SAM-e actually, I didn't think to start that too but I should... amount? I've begun milk thistle, though it's the alcohol based tincture making him gag... I'm going to the Co-op this evening for the pills by Gaia.

Sam-e - if it's pills give him 400 if you can.  The pills are usually enteric and don't absorb as well.  I have liquid I can send you if you let me know -- usually 15 drops or so twice a day (Cell Food SAM-e)

Give him 2-3 milk thistle caps twice a day or you can empty them into something.

Liquid?  open the top and set it in a pan of water (LOWER level of water than the level in the bottle) -- just let it simmer and then turn off and it will evaporate some of the alcohol off.

Add it to yogurt (flavored yogurt is FINE -- just no Nutra=sweet) or most anything -- baby food meat with some veg??

Leaves and Roots (http://www.leavesandroots.com ) you can order just the bulk powder -- just put it in his food - maybe with a little topper (some of the aforementioned baby food meat/veg - I mix them together and keep in a Glad container for just that reason).

I'll call you on the way home. (Remember folks, Outdoorschik and I go WAY way back ... *grin* ... SHE remembers when I had Mike tha Dog!!!!! -- and probably remembers Mike tha Dog WAS Mike tha Dog because there was a Mike on Canine Club who was a PEOPLE!!! LOL)

At first, because of your warning, I didn't read your original post.  I didn't want to have the graphic images in my mind.  But then, after I read the other posts, including the ones referring to the tourniquet versus pressure, I decided I had to be brave and read it because it sounded like there was some important first aid info for me to learn.  I can't imagine experiencing what you described.  My heart goes out to you.

I'm so, so sorry to hear about One Ton's horrible injury -- and I'm sending him a zillion strong, healing vibes.  I hope each hour brings him a tiny bit more strength, as the medications fight the infection and his appetite starts to return.  The actions of your other dogs are just amazing -- it must be an added source of support and inspiration for you to witness that.

I'm also sending you a whole bunch of good vibes, too.  I am someone who panics in an emergency, and I think you showed incredible strength and focus to do all that you did.  Honestly, I think I would've just passed out or been frozen in place screaming.  You DID save your dog's life, and everything you continue to do for him will help him physically and emotionally.  Take care of yourself, too.  You're both in my thoughts.

    Ditto.

I have very little experience with anything traumatic like this.  I'm sure you were a panicked wreck, BUT you held it together and got that dog help !  You saved his life and he knows you are helping him now.

I, too, am impressed by the behavior exhibited by your other dogs.  Impressive !  I think this speaks highly to the relationship you have with them all.

I hope One Ton continues to improve...little by little....day by day.   I LOVE his name :)

Oh my gosh, I have shivers right now. Best wishes to One Ton and to you.  *hugs*  I can't even imagine.

Just seeing this.  So very very sorry this happened to One Ton.  Sending healing vibes and hugs for him.  I do so hope he pulls through.  A hard working dog should have a long happy retirement.  Not this.

outdoorschik, you know you are doing everything you can possibly do.  You did the best you could in the emergency too.  One can not do better than their best.  One Ton knows you gave him your all.  Hang in there.  Both of you!

well I typed a whole response and then lost it :( Thank you everyone for your thoughts and support, it truly helps! I've got a mix of good and bad going on here:

Good, he's drinking on his own, he has a bit of a fan club among the mushers and got four visitors today... bad, it's a ton which is scary since we are worried about kidney damage and he's well hydrated with .5 liters of sub cue twice a day. We're really hoping the kidney numbers rebound after he recovers more and it's not long term damage from the shock (very possible, I learned shock draws blood away from the organs)

Good, I got him up and walking with an assistive harness, two five minute "stand and move your 3 good feets" sessions were exhausting for him, but he can do it... bad, his front limb and paw are cold and stiff and he has zero use of it.

He still refuses food on his own and boy have I tempted him... I have gotten some into him and he takes 5 large syringes before refusing to continue so he's getting some calories.

I'll be calling the vet tomorrow on the paw, I don't know how long he can live with a dead limb, but it seems it needs to come off sooner rather then later, however they didn't want to risk anesthetizing or operating til they knew he was stable and the blood numbers looked better. That is a big quandry.

On a smiling note... we decided if he gets his leg removed One Ton will become 3/4 Ton... sick yes, but god I needed that laugh.

You guys are awesome, I truly believe your positive thoughts are helping me calm down and him feel incrementally better and start to heal.

Sending all the good thoughts I can muster for you and One Ton.  You are seeing progress, and this is so good to read.  If he becomes 3/4Ton, so be it.  He can still take up plenty of room on the couch.

You've done good Mama!  And, don't you forget it.  Its very hard not to panic when trama occurs...so don't beat yourself up about stuff.

I'll be thinking of him and look forward to a good progress report.

You're doing a great job, he's lucky to have you caring for him.

Good news that he is drinking and you got him up. Its hard to get excited though since he's far from being out if the woods obviously. Just keep it up. I hope he pulls through.
