Poor pom dog.

    Poor pom dog.

My best friend Ally is having a really difficult time lately. Her dog's a 15-year old Pomeranian mix with multiple health issues. She had to switch him to soft food, he has very little teeth left and a collapsed trachea. Recently, he's started coughing alot and the vet said if the medicine didn't help, she'd have to put him down. She's had this dog since he was a puppy and honestly I don't know what she'll do when she has to put him down. I'm trying to be there for her as much as I can (told her I'd take off work and go with her) but I'm hoping yall can send some good thoughts her way.

By the way... Thinking about Spike and all the other animals (and people) in this thread made me realize how grateful I am that my boys are still fairly young with only minor issues (like a flea infestation, lol). It's easy to get lost in our own problems, so I hope everyone that's posted before me has been able to start some sort of healing process. =)

Sending your friend and her little pom good vibes.  I'll keep them both in my thoughts and prayers.   Having a friend who understands and is willing to be there during such a tough time makes all the difference in the world.  (((hugs)))

You are more than welcome to give your friend my contact information -- depending on what they are there ARE things you can do (and often vets don't think to tell you).

I've seen some vets who automatically said with a collapsed trachea "You GOTTA put them to sleep" and I've had dogs that I've successfully dealt with them for a LONG time (as in many years).  But you have to do things like feeding them from a higher bowl, etc.

Spike's holding steady on the medication. He's not getting any better or worse at the moment, so we're still hopeful. Thanks for all your good thoughts!
