Keela (and I) need some prayers (UPDATED 3/23)

Keela has a 2 pm appointment at the vet. When I got them up yesterday morning, she had thrown up in her crate - twice. Food colored with several undigested green beans. Not sure what time she did this. Fed breakfast and she urped (and ate it again) it on the couch which I found sometime about noon - nothing like sitting down in a wet spot! By this time, I could tell she didn't feel that great.

The landlord was here all day Friday so she and the rest spent time in their crates. She likes to eat her blanket. Saturday she had to spend time in the crate again as I had to take Sage to the vet for a broken toe. She didn't get her usual slippery elm Saturday morning cause I hadn't had time to make more with the landlord here all day Friday. Didn't really think anything of it cause I was focused on the 10 week old puppy and how to keep her calm for 4 weeks. *pulling hair out already*

After the Sunday morning breakfast urp, I realized I might be dealing with a potential obstruction due to her blanket chewing. Gave her slippery elm throughout the day. My usual food whore was uninterested in food. Not even a head pop from under her blanket when hubby ate chips. She did poop, but not a very large amount. This morning's poop wasn't even a 1/10th of her usual elimination. I started not to feed dinner last night, but she ate it and kept it down. Or so I thought. I found a large spot of bile on the carpet late yesterday evening. Not sure when that happened. This morning she had thrown up twice more, once that had food particles in it and the other a very large pile of bile.

No temp, her gums stayed good color and even though I could tell she didn't feel good and wasn't to thrilled about me touching her stomach - I didn't go to the vet because I knew they would say just watch her, so I have. I've been a nervous wreck all weekend with first one, then the other of my red girls sick and hurt.

I didn't give her breakfast this morning even though she acts semi-interested. Did force some unflavored slippery elm into her though.

So, if you've made it this far through the soap opera, some prayers and good thoughts would be appreciated. I'm hoping it is just a tummy bug, but the blanket consumption really has me scared it is an obstruction. I would really hate for her to have surgery. Not to mention, I am a hairsbreadth from being in the bed with my back from one wrong move, so all of this is got me beyond stressed. Keela's problem is going to postpone me getting Sage to an ortho vet as well. I just want both of my babies to be okay!!!!!

Poor Keela! I hope she just has a bug, and feels better, fast.

They can only poop out what is 'beyond' the obstruction and a partial obstruction can be even tougher to diagnose than a full one.  If the vet has to go into surgery it's best that you have *not* given her anything and this does sound like an obstruction.  Deep breath for yourself --

Can you get hold of Traumeel tabs to have on hand if you do have to do surgery?

Email me -- do you need some White Flower Oil for your own back?  Hylands Calms and Valerian root for YOU (for the back, for the back lady!!! *smile*)

Fingers crossed that she improves quickly!

Keela, you cannot eat your blanket, no matter how tastey it may be!

    Feel better soon, Keela !!

Gosh, you certainly have a lot on your plate right now and stress and worry can take a toll on us, especially with back problems. I hope Keela is feeling better this evening and you can breathe a sigh of relief. I'll keep checking to see what the latest news is but I hope to see something positive.

How's she doing, Amy?  Any update?

ETA: Just saw the update on FB.

Sorry for the late update, but I swear 3 puppies is as bad as triplets plus all the other chaos of the day means I am brain dead and late sitting down. Anyway....

Tech wanted me to leave her almost as soon as I got there but I insisted on staying with her until after the consult and the initial xray. The initial xray showed loops of inflamed bowel. They were thinking obstruction as well and wanted to do a contrast xray series to see what we had. She was definitely tender around her tummy. Left her shortly before 3 and went back before closing. They had said they would keep her overnight, but I wasn't too hip on the idea. I'm glad I went back and talked with the vet. By 5:30 the contrast had migrated into her small intestines but not the large. There was still quite a bit of contrast showing up in her stomach, which he commented on several times. I don't know if things just aren't moving through her bowels very fast or what, but I'm a little concerned about her bowels being sluggish.

So far, no obstruction is visible through the small intestines. I take her back at 8 am for another xray for them to check her large intestines and to see if all the contrast has finally left her stomach. She doesn't get to eat until after the xray. They gave her a little food to get the contrast into her, so at least she had something today. The last time she ate was 5 pm Sunday. Dr. R wanted 24 hours of fasting from her last vomiting episode which was sometime between 2 and 8 am Monday. He gave her an antibiotic shot as well as something to help her feel better. She didn't appreciate the shots as they stung! I told her to just suck it up, better than surgery! LOL

I'm just glad I got to bring my baby home with me. It was so so so so hard leaving her there. I don't know that we are out of the woods yet as she hasn't pooped since early this morning - and there wasn't much there either. She was food hunting and mooching when we got home which I take as a good sign. I know she wants something and it is so hard not to give her anything.

I appreciate everyone's prayers and good thoughts! It helped get me through the day knowing she had others pulling for her. I apologize again for being so late with the update. It was after 10 before I finally sat down and I swear it switched my brain off! LOL Thanks again and I'll update y'all Tuesday after we see the vet again!

Well, Keela's morning xray didn't show any blockage. The stomach had finally emptied of the contrast and it was in the large colon. They said I could start giving her small amounts of food throughout the day. Which she is very happy to have! LOL My little food hound is coming back. I'm adding slippery elm to her snacks to help heal her gut and move whatever might be in there out. She did finally poop this morning after 24 hours. No blanket, but at least things are moving.

I'm feeling a little more optimistic that we can get her through this without surgery. I just have to figure out how to provide warmth for my little heat hound while she is in her crate - cause her blanket is coming out!

A funny story: while we were waiting at the vet yesterday, a gentleman said I should add more fiber to her diet to help prevent things like this. I told him that she did have more fiber seeing as her blanket is one of the microfiber fleece blankets!

My silly little girl! Thank you for all your prayers!

Glad to hear she had a poop!!!  LOL...sounds funny sayin this!

Hope all the problems are done and over with!  Good call on the slippery elm!

Ever try onzies on her?  You could also sew a canvas crate liner -- it's too stiff to be wonderful chewing material - in fact you can just get a long piece and wrap it around the tray.  No 'seams' to attract the mouth.

Or take a piece of foam (or something firmer like one of those mats you stand on in front of the sink? cut it to size) and literally put a pillowcase over it (or several) and then on the UNDER-side fold it over and tape it securely so there is no slack and then put it in the crate tape-side down.  Washable that way.

I'm just seeing this now.  Glad to read she's doing better.  Willow has had inflammed intestinal loops before and it truly was the scariest thing.
