Please Pray and Send Good Thoughts for Riley (mrstjohnson) - UPDATE

Sorry I missed this earlier. I'm glad it's nothing serious! Whew.

Thanks everyone.  Swelling is still there, but not as bad.  Going to get some milk thistle today.  We decided to give her the ibuprofen in some applesauce for now.  She takes it better that way.

The weird thing is, it doesn't hurt her.  I guess this is a classic symptom of juvenile arthitis...the less severe kind at least.  She limps for about 5 minutes in the am and that's it.  If we don't see any improvement by the end of the week, we are calling the doc.

I'm so sorry to hear that Riley is having problems. Could I suggest you pursue a pediatric endocrinologist? I was diagnosed with RA when I was a teenager (that went into remission after 6 years of being on Naprosyn 750 mg twice a day). Since I was still young enough, they left me with the peds specialist and he was SOOOOO great. I'm not knocking family doctors, but I'm so glad that we had a specialist. He left no stone unturned in looking for a treatment that worked, and even stayed with me even after I was to old for the peds department. I'm praying that Riley grows out of this and doesn't have any problems!

I've been looking around for an update and haven't found it. So how about it? How's she doing??? How are you doing?

Sorry that I didnt' see this sooner......but I'm glad its not serious. Gee...not sure that I have heard about juvenile arthitis. I guess I have HEARD of it...but never knew it was quiet so common. I don't know of anyone that has had it.

Sorry I haven't been around much for an update.  I swear things are crazy around here.  If one more emergency situation occurs within this monstrosity of a family of mine I am going to go crazy...nothing super serious, but man enough!  Since my mom and dad and snow birding it in Palm Springs, I am in charge (yucko)!

Anyway, the swelling hasn't gone down much, but she has at least stopped limping and peg legging around (not bending her knee).  We had to go to the eye doc to make sure everything was OK with her eyes (I guess it can affect her eyes) and that was a mess.  She HATES it when people she doesn't know touch her.  And frankly no other doctor gets more in your face than the eye doc.  Thank goodness I have been going to him since I was 6 years old so he was very understanding.  Needless to say, it took three of us to get drops in her eyes so they would dialate.  Yeah, that was a mess.

I spoke with the doc's resident on Wednesday (doc's on vaca) and gave him an update.  He said keep doing what we are doing and that it doesn't sound like she is in any pain since she is still running, jumping, swimming, etc.  We have an appointment next Friday with the specialist again.  I have completely barred myself from looking anything up online to see if it could be anything else.  In the past I have done that and worried myself sick for nothing.  I did one small search on the day it happened and the only word I could see was Leukemia!  It's not that, but one's mind doesn't stop when you start seeing things like that!

Thanks everyone for keeping my little peanut in your thoughts!

If it's JRA please please please please please take her off grains and dairy!  Please read www.dogtorj.com and click on 'the answer'.  google about wheat and inflammation.

I suffered from terrible pain from spondylitis and fibromyalgia (terrible pain every day, horrible) and now, grain and dairy free I have zero pain, the inflammation from teh spondylitis is better, and I feel alive instead of just surviving.

I wish I had known about this years ago, as I had undiagnosed spondylitis (dx'd as growing pains) and terrible fatigue even for a child.  I now feel more alive and young then I ever did.

Soapbox of mine. Ihave the best of intentions :)

Lisa -- thanks for the update.  I'm glad to see you -- I wondered if something was going on.

Lisa, I'm so sorry I haven't replied until now.  I so hope you can get to the bottom of this & that your parents come back so you can hand the family issues back to them. :)  ((HUGS))

Lisa -- thanks for the update.  I'm glad to see you -- I wondered if something was going on.

Nay, nothing major, just big italian family crapolo :)  On top of everything I have been working like a crazy person.  Since I refuse to work at home when Riley is awake it has been many many late nights working after she goes to sleep and nose to the gindstone at work.  I hate it when work gets in the way of my idog time!!!  How dare they!!!

Anyway, went and saw the doc today.  He thinks she is doing much better.  Inflamation is way down.  He is very happy with her progress.  We have to continue the Motrin until it's completely back to normal and we are going back next month.  He did have us make an appt with JRA specialist in April just in case.  He really doesn't think that's it, because she doesn't have any pain and no other swelling.  So we will see.  She has stopped limping in the past couple of days and hasn't peg legged it either so that's good.

    Thanks again everything!

Is it bad that I'm glad I came to this thread so late? I'd have been pulling my hair out along with you if I had caught it before the update! I'm so glad Riley is doing better and that it doesn't appear to be RA. You're a good mom. You can tell from her smile.
