You've got prayers and good thots from here -- such accidents happen SO easily and so fast. (I come from a whole family of "handimen" and my Dad is a woodcarver.)
A few years ago I nearly sliced off my own finger boning a chicken. At the time my big fear was contamination from the chicken, but I nicked the tendon and a few nerves. I had a "fizzy finger" for a long long time -- but that *has* diminished over time and with use. The tough part is that we tend to treat body parts differently after an inury. I can't second strongly enough what danehaven says -- therapy ... even on fingers ... is so important afterwards to regain use of them.
Just the trauma to the body -- he's gonna be MAJORLY sore today even up into his shoulder.
Do you happen to have any arnica (the homeopathic arnica). If you have a health store near you open today you might get him just one vial (and not the 'strong' one -- just the regular dark blue Boiron tube is best). Have him put 3-4 beads under his tongue three or four times a day for the next few days.
It really will help speed healing and help his body cope with the trauma. They don't taste bad (just a bit sweet) -- really does help the body heal better. It's not 'medicine' - it won't clash with anything the doctor has given him -- it just helps healing take place.
Arnica montana is one of those things you keep in your first aid kit -- it's always a good thing to reach for any time there is 'trauma' in the body. From a sprained ankle to an injury or surgery.
