At the foot of Rainbow Bridge sat a very special and dedicated Welcoming Committee -- a medium-sized black mix with straight-up ears laid with her chin on her paws, drawing a long sigh but her head went up watching all who came over the Bridge. The large English cocker mix next to her said quietly "Snickers ... you know Karen is saying Goodbye. She is doing well, Billy has told us that. She's done very ,very well for him."
A nervous little sheltie/corgi mix stopped pacing just long enough to say "Muffin, **you** tell her. You, me, Socks & Old Mike knew Snicker's Mom when she was very young and she's always had the heart to put the dogs first, no matter how hard it was. Snickers, dear ... this dog will be able to tell you how **wonderful** she's doing now."
Snickers sighed and said "It's so nice that there are so many of us who have known her -- well, it's almost like we're all family ... but .... OH ... HERE HE COMES!!"
Another buffy-coat English cocker (smaller than the first but whose tail wags even faster) lept into the air and said "Here he comes!!"
The sheltie mix herds the little red & white Peke to the side "Kee, dearheart, you don't want to get under all those feets!"
Kee Shu replies "Ohhhhh, he's SOOO tall! I'll stay wif you fur now!"
The majestic black & white husky slowed to a stop at the bottom of the Bridge and Snickers met him nose to nose. "You still smell like Mom ... I'm Snickers. Welcome. There is no pain here. There is peace .... and all the running you want to do. We were told you were coming, but we don't know your name??"
The big husky was still sniffing his paw and moving his neck. "You are right, I do not hurt. Oliver told me of you ... he calls you the Great Sister Dog". It is high praise."
The big husky turned to the smaller buffy cocker and said "You are .... Billy. You are not long here yourself. Karen has spoken of your Callie ... you are ... you *all* are a part of our extended pack. I know nothing and yet you all tell me much just by being here. I see others I have known as well. But ... is there no snow here?"
And so each one finds at Rainbow Bridge what's most important to them. Family. Peace. Well being. Tennis balls ... or snow .... and news from home.
Karen -- my heart breaks ... and I had to put this in the place where peace could take its place. I am so glad you got to be there with him rather than just a "failed" surgery. You made the loving decision to free him from pain. It was the right thing to do. *hugs*
