Sniffing branches?

    Sniffing branches?

My dogs will go out of their way to sniff at the ends of twigs and branches...is there an interesting story to tell there?  ...like who's been by this path, too, and who else has touched the branch?  Our puppy is now picking up the behavior from our other crazy dynamic duo.  Maybe they're just Chemists! [:D]

The branches are probably covered in dog urine... think of it as the neighborhood gossip rag. [:)]

I suppose - it does make sense - but these branches are still living on the bush or tree...not on the ground...and are typically out in the woods and look too high (they sniff just the very the tips) to have urine on them but anything's possible! [:D]  Could be bear, moose, or other wild animal urine.

I  like to think that they're deciphering the chemical breakdown of the tree's branches, lol.  ...me need to cut back on caffeine.

P.S. I do realize some male dogs can really hike their leg!  My lovely male squats.

Well they are likely smelling far more than just dogs - birds, squirrels, butterflies, chipmunks, caterpillars, pollen from other plants.......even sweat droplets, hairs, or any other fluids left by other animals. There are so many things a dog could be smelling, as their noses as so fine-tuned.

In my house all behaviour like that is referred to as "Ben checking his pee-mail".

Ah... my answer betrays my urban mindset. [:D] I'm used to just city grime and dog pee!

My guys smell branches all the time. There are tons of animal smells they pick up on and mine also like to smell the areas where certain birds have been ...so maybe it is birds??

    I love that Kate!

We always say that Prudence is leaving her "calling card" for the neighbor boy doggies! [;)]  AND then just cuz DH and I are nuts we make up dialog going on in her head while she is peeing [sm=biggrin.gif]...what she is "saying" to the boys.

The funny thing is that she will pee as soon as we get out the door and then when we come back into our condo (even if we are only gone a minute or two) she insists on smelling the spot she just peed... checking it out to see if anyone left her a message!! [;)]
