What does your dog do when they don't want to do something?

the Danes know full well that no one can move them if they don't want to so they just stop moving and avoid eye contact.

    they practice 'the mule'

I will say it is very effective LOL

Cheyanne darts away. She will sit down and wait for me to get a foot from her and she darts away. But food does the trick every time! Must be the Lab in her.Stick out tongue

Lillie will lay down and shows me her belly. I give her a quick rub, tell her it's ok, give her collar a tug, and then she gets up and will do whatever it is I was asking. Mainly it's getting a bath that makes her do this.

Kujo will run to her cage if we're in the house. If not she will sit down and look away.

Joker does anything I ask. He loves me that much!! Well I like to think that's why.Lol

Fynn. Oh gosh. I'll just use Karen's definition of Bugsy. But he "tries" to be a mule. Fortunatley for me Fynn dont weigh 100+ like Bugsy so he's easy to move!

It depends on the thing and the dog.

Tasha doesn't like her butt and tail to be brushed, so she just walks away. That's not stressful, but she doesn't like it. After two knee surgeries and a few other veterinary procedures, she doesn't like the vet's anymore. That is stressful to her so she'll hide her head in my lap.

Floyd tries to escape. He has a low tolerane level and a high fear level so I've never even tried to put him in a bathtub. He gets his baths on the patio. He has snapped at the vet post knee surgery.

Wolfgang flops or escapes depending on the situation. There's a few dogs he doesn't like and he just moves away although he's not a fearful dog. He's also willing to yelp if a human hurts him and accepts the condolences with lovely licks.

Willow pretends like she cannot hear and looks anywhere in the room except at us.  Or she'll do something close to what we want; like if we ask her to go on her bed and she doesn't want to, she'll go on it, turn a few times then lay next to it.

    Ben does that! LOL.

If we're in the house, he just pretends to be deaf - outside, he'll plant himself totally still and won't move, if I'm trying to get him to move, but I just start acting silly and he can't keep his obstinacy going for long.  He does it very little these days, but even at the height of his "ner ner I can't hear you stage" I bet it will pale in comparison to what Lumos will be capable of.  LOL.

Kivi does sometimes pretend he can't hear. He is a sneaky devil. He has this blank look down pat. He tricks me into thinking he doesn't understand, but then I discover later that he understands perfectly when he actually wants to do it! Do you insist that your dog do what they have been asked or are you open to compromises or non-compliance?

They eventually do what I ask. Cant have them get away with it because they'll think it's ok to do it next time I ask.

For instance Cheyanne only pulls her thing when I want/need to put her up in the dog pen out back(very rarely).

Lillie does it for baths but if Im giving her a bath it's because we're going somewhere and I dont want to take a dirty dog!

Kujo does it when Samantha is trying to get her and she doesnt want her to.

Fynn does it when I ask him to get in the car. He does not like car rides. Im pretty sure it's has to do with the move from Cali to all the way down here. I mean how long of a drive is that?

With Free she turns her back to me and sits. After a bit she will finally listen.

Max howls at me.... It's too funny.

Well, when you have Aussies, they always want to do SOMETHING. Big Smile

When you have a twenty year old deaf and blind Yorkshire Terror, she wants to do something, too, but can't figure out what, so she just wanders around yapping at the Aussies.

When you have a couch potato hound, you get a blank stare.  Wink

Mostly, Shadow will remain still or lay down. Mostly, the only thing he really doesn't like is the vet approaching. Once the shot is in, it's all over.

Heidi will stand and look at me like I'm speaking a foreign language, well I suppose I am.  But, she knows what I'm saying 99.9% of the time.  She cracks me up when its time to go to bed.  I'll tell her to go into her house, then if she is not ready to (most of the time she's ok with it), she saunters over to the water bowl and proceeds to drink and drink and drink...until I tell her to stop and firmly tell her to go into her house.  Indifferent  Sometimes, I have to go get her and lead her in, but most of the time she gives in.  Oh, all right ma.  I dont wanna, though...just so you know.

Buddy will sit down and be a mule.  Its like he's saying...what oh, you want me to sit.  OK, that must be what you want.  There's no leading him when he does that...so I have to put on my silly "hat" and get him to do whatever it is I need for him to do.

Bruder just wants to please, period.  But, sometimes when its time to go to bed and he's not ready, he will get this precious face on and turn around and walk away...watching me as he goes.  I usually have to go get him.  But most of the time, he's very good about going to bed...he loves his room.  I've noticed that recently he is starting to do the "go drink" think like Heidi.  She's such a bad influence.  Big Smile

I just started to think about this question.  Mostly, I do want my dogs to do as I ask, but I must admit that there have been times when I have been confronted with "intelligent disobedience" and then I am much more open to "compromises or non-compliance".  For example, if I call my dog, and she does not come, I'm fine that she disobeyed because SHE saw the truck coming and I didn't (not that this happened, but you get the idea).  Once, my hound refused to move because he had seen a coyote.  As soon as I saw it, too, and acknowledged him for spotting it, he continued along as he was asked.  Sometimes we need to listen to our dogs as well as have them listening to us!

Border Collies are really good at the "stop beating me" drama. I've learned to read the signs that a dog is getting pushed beyond the bounds of compliance and can usually cut the response off at the pass by lowering the bar immediately. I look for a way to make what I'm asking easier.

For a dog that was responding this way to a household routine (let's say getting a bath), I'd desensitize them to being around, then in, the bath. My tub has a soft large mat for secure footing for this reason. I also have a spray hose and never just shower a dog to begin with - instead I hold it right next to their skin so it doesn't make a noise. I have a bucket and dip feetsies in and swish them around for washing them. Anything to reduce reasons to balk.

Gus was passed around so much, and his particular form of hearing loss, makes car rides both emotionally and physically uncomfortable. We started taking him to the gas station a couple miles away and he gets to come into the store and get a snack - Little Debbies are his favorite, though sometimes he's more in the mood for a nab. Big Smile Now he'll jump in and not put on the Beaten Dog look, and at least tries to make himself comfortable on longer rides, rather than huddling miserably on the floor and drooling.

I'm pretty open to compromises. I have a curious spirit and usually if one of my dogs is more interested in something other than me I want to know what it is and why it's so cool. If I'm not interested or know they are being ratbags I nag until they comply. If they are resistant to my nagging I sometimes ask them something easier. Usually they'll do that quite happily.
