Whew!! I saw me quoted in the notification and thought I was gonna get blasted again!! [;)]

Never from me! [;)] I'm not in the blasting business.

Yeah, but, I didn't READ who was quoting me!! LOL.

Good question where the hostility is coming from and why........clearly other parts of the world think of crates as abusive, where we think of them in a different light.

I know with my boys, if they are in the family room alone, now and then I'll hear a little spat break out.  All it takes for me is to open the door and tell them "that will do" and it's done.  But, if I'm not home to do that, it *could* either extinguish itself or escalate and that's not a chance I want to take.  Sheba eats furniture if she's left alone and uncrated. She DOES have a mild form of SA, but, the crate solves that problem. And when I say she eats it, I do mean she can destroy a couch in a matter of 20 minutes.  She's done it.

And, I'll tell ya what, if I don't feed in crates, I have NO idea who's eaten what!  And fresh bones? Those are absolutely crate material!  The old ones, they could care less if someone walks up and takes one right out of their mouths, but the fresh ones?  Yikes!!

Mm-hm. You'll see I edited my last post, so I'll reply to that now. June, if left alone and uncrated, will chew her tail. If she's crated, she sleeps. Bree, if left alone and uncrated, will eat anything not nailed down. If crated, she sleeps. I do leave Ginger and Zippy out from time to time, but like I've said before with Ginger's arthritis sometimes that is a nogo - and also when she needs an attitude adjustment.

Ya know, my gsd mix never ate anything. My cockers SURELY never ate anything, but they were crated when we were away, but gsds, wow!  I hadn't a clue!!  The pups have chewed their way through TWO freecycle sofas.......

At what University did you receive your MA or Doctorate?

Mic, he's been here before and caused quite the uproar last time.  Don't feed him.  WE couldn't possibly have the knowledge that he does....not even you!
    • Gold Top Dog
Did you get my PM Glenda?
    • Gold Top Dog
Yep, just got it Mic.  Two brilliant minds with but a single thought!!

The personal debate here does not belong nor does the condesending tones involved.

Stay on topic of the OP or there will be a time out.

Jaime is absolutely right.  We can't help the OP if we are bickering.

i saw someone mention earlier about kongs. those are hte greatest things ever invented. if you ever decide to crate your doggie, kongs are great b/c you can stuff them with anything and they will keep your dog occupied! the black kongs are the most durable. we also have a kong ball and if kenny rolls it the right way, the treats come out. they also have kong paste that you can put in the kong ball grooves and your dog can lick it off and kong treats that specifically fit in the regular kongs..

Ummm, Stan?  I'm not particularly concerned with WHAT your opinion is of how my dogs are treated.  If I want TWENTY, then I'll have twenty, and if I choose to keep them SAFE in crates when I'm away, then that's what I'll do.  I've known many firefighters who's hearts were hurting because they HAD to use the fire ax on a dog to save the children........

Of course you are not concerned about what I think or believe is abuse, as you say you could have  twenty dogs and abuse them all!  That is you mindset ie, "I can do whatever with my dogs because I own them!"

Caging dogs daily is abuse caging,  7 GSDs caged daily is an offence in the UK and your dogs would be removed from you and you would be banned from owning dogs for life.

How about they deserve a future and a life not just daily locked in cages in case you have a fire. What a ludicrous excuse, How can you assuage yourself on this forum with the amount of advice you give with what I consider as abuse, and tantamount to animal torture

I do this for a living I do not play at this. realise your dogs also have a life as well as you? And they do not have a choice ........You do!

You are certainly entitled to hold your own opinion, but for the record?  My dogs are NOT crated on a daily basis, other than for their meals.

    And your point is?

As it happens I have a honorary Doctorate in metaphysics but never use the title as it is not related entirely to my work with dogs, though metaphysics is a branch of psychology and philosophy.  the metaphysician is concerned with the nature of all reality. A central branch of metaphysics is ontology the investigation into what categories of things are in the world and what relations these things bear to one another. The metaphysician also attempts to clarify the notions that figure fundamentally in our understanding of the world; these notions include existence,  property, space, time, causality, and possibility.

My specific canine diplomas are through the Animal Care College in the UK. My background was initially in human psychology which does have a bearing on what I do as I also have to deal with owners psyche  when I am treating the dogs.

Perhaps you share with us your academic qualifications in the field of animal behaviour? I have visited your web site and their is no mention of nomenclatures or academic qualifications. Their is also no mention of the type of methods you use except for reference to clicker training what other tools do you use in your training regime?

I adopted one of Glenda's fosters and I can ATTEST HER DOGS ARE NOT ABUSED. Don't even HINT that my Molly was abused by Glenda. I haven't read all the posts but these last few have Molly fuming. And yes I shall go back and read all the posts.
When we first brought Molly home she was 5 months old and didn't have to be home alone as my husband (a mason) was home most every day due to the weather (winter).
Once DH went back to work we did keep Molly confined to one room and then all hell broke loose. She tore curtains off the windows, pulled wooden slats off the atrium door which we installed just a year ago, was tearing the floor rug apart,. I was putting things away every day before leaving for work but she'd find anything. I gave her a Kong but when she grew bored with that she'd search her room for anyting to tear apart.
I was more concerned she'd ingest something and end up with emergency surgery if I didn't crate her. DH never wanted to crate a dog but for Molly's safety I got a crate.
She's in there from 7:30am till noon time when I come home and take her for a walk. Back in the crate at 12:30 and my teen son is usually home by 3 to let her out.
Molly is fine AND SAFE. I once again have curtains on the wall and I don't have to worry about coming home to a dog that has possibly choked to death on a foreign object or a dog who needs surgery for a foreign object blocking something inside her. And I have my sanity back....I was getting to the point where I dreaded coming home cause I knew I'd have at least 1/2 hour of cleanup ahead of me.
It's about the dog's safety it is not abuse unless a person uses the crate strictly for confinement and selfish reasons. Molly will now even go into her crate after a hike - it's quiet in the room where the crate is, has a nice soft bed in there. So when she's exhausted she likes to nap in there.
