My dog is peeing on plastic bags!

My dog is peeing on plastic bags!

My 2 year old Shih Tzu is housetrained for the most part (he poops in the house if we're at work sometimes) but he never peed in the house, unless he had a UTI (which he has had before).  Now, for the past month or so he'll pee only if there's a plastic bag on the floor.  Like a plastic shopping bag type.  What's going on?

I googled for dogs peeing on plastic bags and a few people mentioned in various places the behavior with regard to plastic bags only, but only received responses about the dog not being fully housebroken. There must be something about it.  I'm curious as to why he would only pee on plastic bags inside our home.  Any ideas?

Those people are right that he isn't fully housetrained.  I guess it seems simple enough to me to stop the peeing on plastic bags.....don't leave any on the floor?

Yeah, plus it's not a good idea to leave the bags around anyway, he could chew them.

Seeking out strange/cool/soft places to pee is a classic UTI symptom, so check with your vet first.  And I agree with picking up the bags.  :)

Just to clarify - I'm not leaving plastic bags all over my home because I'm too paranoid he would get trapped in them if he felt curious one day.  We had a few sealed plastic garbage bags full of clothes to donate to Goodwill in our bedroom that he peed on.  He also peed on a sealed plastic garbage bag filled with our shredded recycling.  I just found it curious as to why he was picking only plastic bags as opposed to a throw rug or something else.

This is exactly the kind of response I was looking for.  Thank you, I will call my vet today.  That makes sense. :)

    How'd he make out?

The Urinalysis came back negative.  The doctor told me that right now it's mating season and sometimes it causes even neutered dogs to do strange things.  I told him that for the past two weeks or so, he's been doing other strange things but none that I related to the peeing on bags incident.

For example, we normally leash him and he does his business in our front yard. Lately, he's been BOLTING down the hill toward our backyard and barking into seemingly nothingness.  He's always been trembling inside the home and staring off towards nothing that I can see wrong.  So, I don't know if he hears an animal or something is going on outside or what.  He hasn't peed as far as I can tell since I removed all the plastic bags from the floor.

I'm not really sure what to make of all the strange behavior.  He's drinking and eating just fine.

Even if he is neutered this may be a marking behaviour, but particularly if he's not, he may be peeing on the plastic bags because they are strange, temporary objects that do not smell like him.  My dog has been fixed too, but put up any strange object on his normal outside walk/park route, and I guarantee he will wee on it.  He doesn't do it inside, but he is fully housetrained....including knowing not to mark in the house.  Smaller dogs (I am guessing he is a small dog from your avatar) are notoriously harder to housetrain and it sounds to me like that needs more work, but as to why the plastic bags, I think it's the reason I stated above.  They're weird and not part of his normal environment, he needs to make them "his".

You are not alone.  My dog does this at times too.  He was never particularly WELL house trained to begin with and although he is much better now, we find it is just easier to contain and supervise.  I am glad the tests came back with a good result!
