    potty in the rain

So Zack's been doing great, no peeing in the house for over a month and half.  Problem was today...because it was raining.  He absolutely DESPISES getting wet and acts like he is being tortured.  He will go potty outside in the rain but the problem is that when he has to go again, instead of holding it to go outside, he pees and poops in the house so that he won't have to go outside.  How  can I nip this behavior in the bud before it develops into a habit?  He has never experienced snow or ice before and if he thinks the rain is torture...

My boys are prisses too.  This morning as Hanna blew overhead I had to stand and block the deck stairs until they peed because they hadn't eliminated since about 5 pm yesterday.  I would take your pup out immediately upon waking and not come in until it eliminates.  If you have a cue, that helps.  My dogs know what I mean when I say "go potty" because the minute they do, I praise and then let them in.  If he's stubborn and won't go, bring him in and crate him.  Repeat taking him out and crating him if he won't go.  Then as soon as he goes, praise him heavily and then keep him out of the crate inside.  I think he'll eventually "get it" that the rules are go potty or go in the crate.  Once he gets it, I think you'll find less accidents in the house.

Do you have a house or apartment?  If you have a house, I know some people let their dogs potty in the garage.

I have the opposite problem - mind LOVE rain.  They fool around instead of pottying and then want to wrestle in the mud.

I agree with BC.  The place to go potty is ALWAYS outside.  Be sure that you are keeping him on a regular schedule of potty breaks so he doesn't have the option of not asking because of a little thing like rain.

He will go potty out on the rain if I force him too, but then he'll go again in the house an hour later.  l guess when it rains I just have to take him out more often, the exact opposite of what he wants!

Liesje Ari LOVES the rain too, especially mud.  Mud is good stuff, especially when your owner is getting cold and wet and NOT having a good time - then it's the perfect time to plant two muddy paws on their jeans :)

Is your little guy food motivated at all?  Maybe some high value treats in the rain after he does his business would help?

Bugsy loves the rain too and has been known to be out and about in thunder and lightning Confused

I would take him out on schedule and use an umbrella so that he completes the job instead of just doing a little to show you he went.  Bugs will sometimes just pee because he knows I've asked him to but it isn't a full job.  He does this when we are going in the car - he knows I won't let him in until he pees so he appeases me.
