My house trained dog is pooping in the house!

My house trained dog is pooping in the house!

I have a German Shorthaired Pointer that turned 3 this past October and she has been pooping in the house for almost a week!  She has very easy access to do her business outside, but lately she only does her business inside, on the carpet.  My husband and I haven't been able to spend much time with her lately...could this be the cause?  Are there health conditions that could cause this change in behavior?  Any comments are appreciated...thanks.

It seems is time to go and visit the vet just in case, also changes in the enviroment can cause this type of behavior, like new furniture, new room, etc.

It is always better to take her out yourself than just expecting her to go outside whenever she wants or not, one to make it sure it happens and 2 because the walk makes you bond with your dog more [:D]

Thanks very much for your response, espencer!

Nothing has changed in her environment since we moved into our new house 3 months ago.  She had the routine of going outside to do her business down immediately when we moved in...she just started eliminating in the house.

Also, she doesn't have any trouble "going".  And in the 3 years that I have taken her on walks, she has never stopped to eliminate while we were walking.

However, judging by her behavior over the past couple of days, I think that she was just starving for attention.  I'm glad the holidays are over!!  [:)]

I think this could VERY likely be the cause. I can't tell you how many countless greyhounds have been returned by their owners to the rescue I volunteer with  because of a "sudden" problem with urinating or deficating in the house.  In the majority of the situations it was absolutley a result of the dog sending a message that they were unhappy and in most cases their unhappiness related to the dog suddenly not getting enough attention.

Now that things are calmed down with the holidays gone, I would see what happens  for a bit and if the problem continues and she is for sure getting the love attention she had before her problems started then I would take her to the vet...IMO  I believe it is behavioral though![;)]

I definately think that the lack of time spent with her is the cause.  I have a black lab that was always at my side from the time she was a puppy.  She was fine at the house without me there, but we still spent a lot of time together.  When I started going to a new school that was closer to the barn than the house was, I didn't make the extra trip to pick her up.  She still came with me on the weekends, but that wasn't enough for her.  She had a covered porch with a pool and a doggy door to the back yard.  She pooped every day just inside the doggy door.  Sometimes it would be one little piece.  I started making an effort to bring her to the beach after I got home and playing fetch with her and the problem stopped.  That was when she was around 3 or 4 years old, she is almost 10 now and seems to have outgrown the pooping thing, although she still lets me know when she's mad at me.

Now was he housetrained at the house where you moved in 3 months ago? if he is 3 years old that means maybe was housetrained before but as you could imagine he might think the new house is not a "not pee area" as the other house was, he was trained not to do it at the other house, not this one, is that your case?

Here is a link that talks about what to do when you move into a new house and how the dog feels about it:

She was housetrained in our old house, she's never had an incident in the new house until just recently.  However, she is back to her normal behavior now...and so are we!  [;)]
