Appropriate Crate Size

Right now I'm using one of those plastic cages I borrowed from someone I know to crate my puppy Tyson. Clearly, he's going to outgrow this in a couple of weeks. I want to get him one of the large wired cages that come with a divider to make the space smaller but I don't know what size to buy. THey're expensive and I don't want to buy one that'll be too small then have to buy another but I also don't want to waste money buying a cage that is much larger than what Tyson will grow to be. He's a siberian husky. I know its hard predicting how big he'll turn out but do you guys have any suggestions? Or does anyone else have a siberian husky and can tell me what size cage they used?

I would guess a 36" or maybe the next size up. My GSD is in a 36" and she's a little larger than a Sibe (or what I've seen of purebred Sibes and see as their height/weight standard). My other dog is considerably taller and bigger and he has a 42" wire crate, but he always goes in the 36" instead, I guess it feels more like a den to him. When I bought crates I found that my dogs were both 1-2 sizes smaller than what it says on the crate package. My 36" wire crate for my GSD was about $80 from Amazon and it's a folding suitcase crate, also made with a very strong wire gauge. It came with a plastic bottom that slides out.

I bought my Swissy the largest crate I could find when he was a puppy and used the divider to contain as he grew. knowing he was going to be a large dog I invested upfront. I don't think you'll regreat a larger crate as he grows - invest now and you won't have to later. I don't think it could ever be to big for the dog, for the house - yes. Wink

He is a beauty.

The 48s are HUGE. Casey has a 36, and when I was fostering a dane/lab mix - she curled up nicely in the back, with room to spare (She chose this, I didn't make her).

I would check out craigslist or ebay and try to find a used one - your wallet will thank you! Also - check out your local shelter, we have a crate rental progam at the Humane Society here that would be a lot cheaper than buying a new one.
