Before you have a chance to clean it up,she eats it.We are trying to teach her to go outside, she is not house broken yet,so she sneaks away and does this.We had her for about 4 weeks now.We live in Ohio and the weather is cold and rain today. She does not like to be out there long. She's been doing this for a couple weeks now.

Welcome.  Glad to meet you.  Go to the current thread of Eating poop and Vomiting.  It's a similar question that I just answered a little bit on.

Spirit dogs:   Cute answer, but look at the number of posts!! She's just gotten here.  Let's give a couple of months for the newbies before we turn on the humor we all love about you!! [:)]

Just want to ask if you are scolding or punishing your pup for accidents in the house. That maybe why she is 'sneaks away and disposes (eats) of the evidence!

Good catch, Denise.  I think I was posting when she wrote it was poop that was inside the house.  I assumed it was outside.    I neve scolded my dogs for going inside, and we had more moments of that than I would like to remember. That can cause them to eat it.

But, I also remember reading that if you can, not to let the pup see you clean it up.  I think for some dogs, that they may take that duty on themselves, by eating it.

Also, you must use a good enzymatic cleaner such as Petastic or PetForce in order to neutralize the odor that the dogs can still smell.  If they smell where they've been, then they will take that to mean, "that's the place where I'm supposed to go because I smell it".

No yelling or anything like that. She is well loved, but this is driving us crazy. We had another dachshund for 18 years and that one never did anything like this. But that was 8 years ago.

Sorry, chasza - I had to get in a laugh to save me from the torment on another thread LOL.
cjp, if your pup isn't housetrained, you are probably giving just a wee bit too much freedom too soon.  If you tether the dog to you, you reduce the possibility that she can run off to find her poo (which she should not be able to do in the house, either, since you will be right there at the end of the leash to say "eh-eh, outside?" if she goes to squat.  Be careful not to scold her for any mistakes, as she may learn not to want to go in front of you.  You want her to be able to do that so that she will do it in front of you outdoors, and then you can reward her.
Some people think that if you put MSG or pineapple juice in the food, that the pup won't eat her feces.  Personally, I prefer to manage the dog in the way I just explained, since I don't think MSG is good for dogs, and some won't eat their food with pineapple in it.  HTH
Oh, and by the way, welcome to the forum! [:D]

Spiritdogs: I laughed, too.  It was good to get in a laugh today, and fortunately the op took it the same way.

I always forget about the teether idea b/c I didn't know of it when my guys were young.  I did do lots of lavish praising and some treats when they were outside to poop and piddle.

Hello, and welcome to the forum, Both our GSD did this GRRRR, they could be missing an emzyme found in their poop, gross I know, but you can do is besides picking the poop quickly, there are tablets that will make them not eat the yucky stuff, most any pet store carries them, they go by weight of your dog.
    good luck

Some breeds are more prone to coprophagia than others.  If your pup is pooping in a hidden place and consuming it then you are giving your pup too much freedom.  If you do not want to tether your pup, then use babygates to control access to each room, or just shut the door, if that's feasible.

The pup needs to be housebroken before it can have free access to the entire house.  Freedom is earned little by little.

When you see your dog defecate, clean it up immediately.  Do not let the pupper have the chance to even think...hmmm good snack.

I have two coprophagic dogs, it's inherent in this particular breed.  They will sometimes grow out of it, some of them do not.  There are enzymes that you can put into their food that will prevent them from eating their own poop, but that will not prevent them from eating other's poop.  The best treatment is to clean up asap, otherwise this can manifest itself into a habit that is very difficult to break.

You could also try adding yogurt (plain unflavored with active cultures) to the food.  Make sure you're feeding a good balanced food that is not grain/wheat/corn or sugar heavy.  If, in fact, your dog is getting a less than complete food, he/she may be searching for undigested nutrients in his/her own waste.

For suggestions on foods, you can PM me or go to the nutrition thread-there are many more people that are more knowledgeable than I am there.

We have a 8 month old lab who is a poop eater in recovery (WE HOPE!) She started doing it around 4 months old?? She was very easy to house train and prettty much house trained herself, but ate her poop outside. We tried everything- De-ter,Stop Eating Poop, Forbid (food additives that are SUPPOSED to curb the habit-you can find them online or in pet suppliers)-none worked on her- and we did our best following her around and picking up after- but- you can't always be following your pup around 24-7. Our vet suggested Adolph's meat tenderizer- he said it helps break down the undigested protein in in their bellies so their poop is less of a tasty protein treat on the back end. This seems to have worked-we also have put some habenero sauce on some bits we left out too! She's not a fan of Mexican. Good luck!

I believe some dogs do this because of a lack of vitamins/minerals, or protein (?)

    What are you feeding?
