Overly Excited To See Anyone and Scared of Storms

I'm writing because of my parents' schnoodle (schnauzer poodle mix).  She's a sweet dog and generally well behaved dog but whenever someone shows up at the house, she goes berzerk with happiness.  There's very little jumping, though if another dog does it, she will.  She constantly has to butt ahead of all of the other dogs to get her hellos in, and sometimes she pees.

She's a bit over 2 years old now, and I know it's still her puppy excitement, but I'm unsure how to break her of this habit, especially the peeing.  This is very hard for me to enforce because I don't live in the house, but basically I've just been ignoring her until she calms down.  Sometimes I'm not even there long enough to reward her for being good.

Also, does anyone here have a dog that has a nervous breakdown over thunderstorms?  My parents' other dog is inconsolable when one comes through, sometimes he gets freaked out by regular storms as well.

    Any suggestions?

For the excitement when someone enters, "No Touch, No Talk, No Eye Contact".  Have people enter and ignore her until she's settled down a bit and then have her sit to greet and treat her for calm behavior.  If they interact and she gets all excited again, ignore until she's calm.  She'll learn that the calm behavior is the one that is rewarded and gets her what she wants.  It will help with the peeing too, she may be a very submissive dog if that's happening and may find the direct eye contact intimidating, so if she pees when they look at her or interact with her, have them try it w/o eye contact, that can help her get used to it without being intimidated.

For the storms, what has worked for me is to do training and treats when the storms come through and to ignore anxious, fearful behavior.  It is working, slowly.  In fact, Indie responded faster than Woobie.  But Woobie wasn't afraid of storms before Indie came, he picked up on Indie's stormaphobia when I first got him.  Now I'm reconditioning both of them.  We recently had a very bad storm and several intense thunderstrikes right outside the house that shook the house seriously.  Even I was afraid.  Although they both paced and panted, their reaction was a fraction of what it had been in the past.  Indie was very close to vomiting and having diarrhea all over in the past, this time he just came and laid down next to me.  I'll be there for physical comfort in my presence, but I do not stroke them, pet them, or talk to them as that might be misunderstood by them as reassurance or praise for nervous behavior.  During the storms though, they've come to expect training and treats as they'll often go sit near the box that's on top of their crates that holds the clicker and the treats.

    Good luck!

She's no puppy anymore. You can consider her working her way out of adolescence, but definately too old to be considering this puppy behavior.

She just needs to be shown how to act when others are around.  She needs to be socialized, she needs obedience training so that when she is told to sit, she sits and waits for her release.

Completely agree with the no talk, no touch, no eye contact when people come into the house.  And, at the same time she needs to be placed in a down/stay.  It will take time and effort, not something that will be resolved overnight.

My lab is fearful of thunder.  I made the mistake of telling him "its okay" when he whined or barked at the thunder.  All that did was enstill in him that being scared and whining was the right thing to do.  Wrong!  Live and learn.  I know now that I either ignore his behavior and I myself keep a calm mindset so he feels no fear coming from me.  Or if he gets crazy, tell him no and to lay down.  And I'll usually give him something to distract him...kong, rawhide...etc.

Some folks give their dogs a calming herb (supplement?).  I can't remember what it is called (maybe valerian?)  You can search this board for remedies.  Callie will have the herbal remedy for this.

    Good luck!
