my dog will not bark at anyone...

my dog will not bark at anyone..he is almost a year old , he is a full blooded austrailian shepard black tri. the only thing he does to strangers is lick them and get excited. is there anyway to teach him to bark at strangers? he has got to be the worst guard dog ever. the other day my wife locked herself out of the house and had to use the window to get in and all he did was lick her the whole way in ...any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated..thanks in advance.

I would hope your dog wouldn't bite your wife (one of his pack) for coming in the window. That's not really a good way to assess whether or not your dog barks when you are not there.

You can get your dog to bark (by doing something that normally does make him bark) and put it on a cue like "scram" intead of "speak".  At least then, if someone is coming in, you can tell them to scram and the dog will help you out.  [:D]
If this is a young dog, be aware that sometimes they don't find a voice while they're still pups.

Neither does mine.  Never barks at people, doorbells, knocks, people coming in or out of the house, etc....He barks occasionally at a squirrel or distant noise when he's outside, but NEVER has he barked in the house that I can recall.  He just turned 5.

Oh, I love having a dog that doesn't bark.

I still hold out that if you were home and appeared startled or scared of the person entering the house, they would sense it and get agitated themselves. Maybe.

well, aussies aren't supposed to be guard dogs. Most seem to bark a lot when they get excited about their work, though.

Our Shiba-Inu/Husky mix never barks. Except at one neighbor. But, he's generally afraid of dogs and I think she senses that. Or just doesn't like him. That's o.k, though, we don't like him either. Our eight month old has been more vocal lately. I think she's going through a stage where she'll bark at almost anything. She's learning that it's o.k. to give a warning bark, but needs to stop when I shush her.

I would hope neither of them would bark if a family member had to come through a window! Chances are, they wouldn't bark at anyone coming in--all they'd care about is whether the intruder looked like they wanted puppy kisses. And, they think EVERYONE wants their puppy kisses!

I like to believe that if the dogs thought I, or any family member, were being physically threatened, the intruder would find a very different situation. I also hope to never have to test my theory!

I beg to differ - read the ASCA Australian Shepherd breed standard. [:D]

Aussies are a dog of "strong herding and guarding instinct".

You sound like you have a really sweet dog.

    Truer words ne'er were spoken.

I would give my left leg for a dog that wouldn't bark, considering mine bark at everything.

You might be surprised actually at how your dog reacts if you or your wife were threatened or someone was actually breaking in…   Many greyhounds don#%92t bark and my first 2 never barked at anything, but on several occasions when they felt that someone was a threat to me they went absolutely NUTS!!![:o]

I would have never expected that from them.  Honestly the lack of barking is one of the things I love most about greyhounds…if I were you I would be counting my lucky stars!  [;)]
