Marking!

    Marking!

Marley has most recently taken to lifting his leg as we walk by stuff and marking it. Today he did it as we walked out of the door of training class...I was so embarassed! I don't want to encourage this type of behavior. Can he be trained not to do this? What do I do to stop it? Help!

Thast happened to me before. Me and my dog, Charlie, were in petco and he suddenly decided to pee on some dog food bags. I was really upset and scolded him for it. Now everytime we go somewhere I make sure he has had plenty of potty breaks before going in a Store or Training facility and when I see him start to lift his leg I give him a gerk on teh leash and tell him 'No!'.

Its works..if I chatch him in enough time.

Im not sure why dogs have to pee on something everytime they go somewhere new but when me and my dog go somewhere I make sure to let him 'do his business' before going in a place.

Perhaps with some training you can break your dog of that habit. :)

Are dogs not suppose to mark?  This is the first time I have had a male dog and he marks on just about every piece of nature outside from trees to bushes and sometimes fire hydrants.  Should I not be letting him do this?  Now, when it seems like he is going to mark on the wall of my building, a newspaper lying on the front walk or an air conditioning unit, I stop him.  I won't let him do that.  But, is it okay for the other stuff?

Early neutering can help but Odie was neutered early and he still wanted to mark in areas where there were lots of other dogs.  Like at training class.  Very impressive.

I taught him "leave it."  When he gives something inappropriate a sniff, like he MIGHT want to pee on it, I just tell him to "leave it."

IMO i dont let my dog sniff every single post or tree that is on our way, of course that means not marking either, the dogs wont feel bad if you dont let them mark, they are more focused on the walk and doing excersice if they dont stop every 3 feet to smell or mark something and IMO is more beneficial that way not only for him but for me too, NILIF and that includes stopping during the walk, their "price" for a good walk with out interruptions is letting them pee and sniff around for 5 minutes but only in my terms, that helps me to make them realize i am the one in control, show them that "territory" is mine and they cant mark my territory just as they cant mark inside MY house

Marking is natural behavior for both males and females.  Neutering usually helps the males not to develop a serious marking habit, but some dogs do continue marking post neuter, especially if they are neutered after the age of sexual maturity.  It's pretty harmless outdoors, but most people try to discourage it indoors.  In the context of a training facility, it happens from time to time - occupational hazard of having so many doggies and so many scents in the place.  I'm sure you were more embarrassed than your trainer was upset LOL.

Both my guys are mark-a-holics, especially Conrad. Both neutered, etc. They don't do it indoors but I wouldn't get too freaked out if they did it once or twice in places that had a lot of previous dog-smells happening. There's a chemical in dog pee that stimulates other dogs to want to pee. It's sort of out of their control to some extent if something is just soaked in dog pee and they stop for a sniff.

On walks, there's a time for pee-mail and there's a time for walking. I allow about a block of sniff-n-pee, then we truck pretty fast for most of the rest of the walk, but once we get to the park I slow down for more. The dogs take their cue from how fast I'm walking. If I'm strolling, they stroll as well and will sniff and mark as needed. If I'm walking quickly, they have to keep up, so they keep focused on the task at hand. If one stops, I say "let's go!" and I don't stop or slow down.

Well, it is good to hear that it is fairly normal.  Buddy is going to be nuetered this week at 8mo. old.  Have we beat sexually maturity?  :)  On our walks there are some places that he aways marks and others he can take it or leave it.

    Smaller dogs mature faster.
You can only really tell after neutering.
