The clicker training challenge

    The clicker training challenge

OK, I'm convinced that most people who have never tried clicker training, and can't understand why some of us are so fired up about it, should give us the benefit of the doubt.  Not by trying it a few times in your living room, with no help.  Not by doing it incorrectly because no one ever showed you the correct way, or explained the principles behind it.  But, by actually going out and paying for a class, taking the complete course, and really doing the homework each week.  Granted, not everyone has the money for that, but even buying the Peggy Tillman book "Clicking With Your Dog" or clickerlessons.com, and doing the lessons each week might be better than criticizing without fully giving it the old college try.  Is anyone up for a week by week session, right here, following along with the book, or reporting back to us on your class?  If you already know the basics, perhaps you could teach some new behaviors, and let us know how you did it.  Even though I don't have the capability, certainly videos are welcome.

BTW, this is NOT a thread to dis clicker training, not a thread to tell us why it didn't work for you, not a thread to even mention CM or any other non-clicker trainer.  This is a thread for people who might want to try the method, get some support, and chat about your results.

So, lesson number one:  charge the clicker.

Then, do name recognition and attention:

    http://www.clickerlessons.com/attention.htm

You'd be amazed how many of my students think their dog knows his/her name, but when the owner says the dog's name, he doesn't turn toward the owner, or offer any other behavior that tells me he recognizes the word.  Do these exercises anyway, even if your dog does know his name, though.  It's good practice.

To work on your own timing - toss a tennis ball in the air and see if you can click as it reaches the top of its arc.  (Don't do this one where Fido can hear!)

Lesson a week if you want -  all are welcome, and if you are a devotee of another method, we promise not to do any "I told you so's" on this thread. This is for learning purposes only.  Grab that clicker!

Too bad I don't have a dog yet.  When I get him/her, I'm in. :oD

I'm game with Lily. She isn't clicker savy yet so it's like starting from scratch.

I'm going to get back to clicking with Kenya.  I'm training her to do some more trick-like things like going out and around objects (working away from me) and doing a figure 8 around my legs.  I planned to use the clicker to teach her to spin right and spin left but she's already go it!

    • Gold Top Dog

I will try.  Selli already has a basic understanding of the clicker, although I have not used it very much.  But to make this interesting, I will try with Duffy, who has never worked with a clicker and is harder to train.

Jewlieee, if you have mastered "touch" and managed to have your dog not "reacting", I have a feeling you are going to love this stuff!

Great to have you all giving it a try.  If I don't jump in here, and you need help, PM and I'll post.  And, if you don't have a dog yet, don't worry, you can clicker train cats, fish, dolphins, horses, humans....the possibilities are endless;-))

That's true...I should clicker the cat.  He needs a little more interaction, anyway.

Great idea, I'll do the lessons with my pup.  Since I have been very ill over the winter, she really hasn't had a lot done with her.  But she does know the clicker and a bunch of behaviours but was a while ago.

Great, I can't wait to hear the progress reports!  Happy clicking... Big Smile

Ooh, can Gaci and Shimmer join anyhow? Maybe cheer on from the sidelines?

    MoJo might be game too!

    • Gold Top Dog

Absolutely, Kim.  There's always a new behavior to teach, right?  And, it'll be nice to have some extra advice and support for everyone from a knowledgeable clicker trainer.

    Big Smile

I decided to post it, as some folks in the past have said they aren't that fond of Peggy Tillman's book.

www.Dragonflyllama.com is an excellent clicker website. It is Sue Ailsby's Levels training and she states she will stand behind saying a Level Six dog is a month away from any title. I believe it :) This really is one of the most comprehensive training programs I have seen. I used to teach classes based on it and most dogs where ready for their CGCs once they had the level Two stuff.

It is a good inspiration for things you can/should teach to make sure your dog has a well rounded eduaction. There is an online "book" which explains how to teach each behavior, how to fix problems with teaching the behaviors and lots of clicker info as well. There is also a Yahoo TrainingLevels group for this program and a Training Levels tracker where you can enter your dog's names and check off behaviors in each level as you complete them, as well as a place to journal about your sessions.

Thanks for the reminder - I'm going to add that to the clicker links post also.  Sue's stuff is great, and I use a lot of it myself.  I don't know if I can sign up for yet another Yahoo dog related group.  I would probably spend four hours reading my daily digests, but that's probably a very worthwhile one;-))  Thanks for posting.

Has anyone started and gotten a new or improved behavior yet???
