Housetraining problems with my dog - a little over a year old

            Hi everyone

I have a Scottish Terrier who is a little over a year old and I have always had problems housetraining her. This is my current situation:

I work full time during the week and keep her in the crate while I am out of the house. I come home for lunch 90% of the time so that I can let her out. Each weekday when I wake up I take her out to go pee, bring her back inside to feed her, and directly after that take her outside again to go poop. I was very happy to have gotten on this schedule - but the problem is if I deviate from it ever so slightly she will poop or pee in the house. During my lunch break she goes outside to go pee only. She does not go potty in her crate, ever. When I get home from work I take her outside to go pee, usually a walk also, where she poops and pees again. She has no problem going to the bathroom outside or holding it for several hours while I am at work. but she goes to the bathroom all over my apartment! Although my work schedule stays the same I do go to class after work M-W and my schedule changes slightly there. On the weekend depending on what I am doing there is not really a schedule at all (except the wake up part).

I have been crate training her for several months now and take her out regularly, but she still does it. Usually in the same spot but sometimes somewhere new. I am not sure what to do because my schedule is always changing but I have been trying to train her since I had her at 2 months and I just feel that she should know not to go in the house by now. I never catch her doing it, so I can't scold her or bring her outside right after.

    Any ideas?

Just to better understand, if she goes outside morning, lunch, and dinner - and is in the crate during the daytime otherwise, when does she get the chance to go inside? Is it in the evenings while you are home?

I have two suggestions: 1) Work on the training from square one, i.e., work on training like you would for a young pup since it sounds like she still does not understand it's not okay to go in the house. To do this, keep up with your consistent schedule and remember to give her much praise when she goes outside (positive reinforcement - treats help too). 2) It sounds like you are very busy - is it possible she needs more exercise? If my pup doesn't go at one of her "normal" times (wake-up, lunch, dinner) - a walk or romp in the park is all it takes to get her to go. Exercise tends to get things moving - if you know what I mean Smile

My 9 month old has been housetrained since about 4 months (I feel pretty lucky!). Here is her day:

Wake-up:  pee immediately, 1/2 hour walk to park and poop on the way, then breakfast and ready to nap for the day

Lunch (if I come home): pee

After work: pee immediately, 1/2 hour walk to park and poop on the way, then dinner and ready to settle down for the evening

Before bed: pee again, poop again if needed (between "after work" and "before bed", try to take her out every 1/2 hour or so just in case she does need to go and make sure to praise heavily when she does go outside. I did this at an earlier age but she no longers needs it.)

The walks have always worked like a charm - but then again, she has been very good about going outside from the start. However, I do believe the exercise keeps her regular. Once she is about 1 year old, I will add an additional 1/2 to her evening walks as there are often times that she will go twice in one night. I hope some of this helps ~ good luck Smile

She just doesn't get that the house is off limits for toileting.  So, even though you don't have her in her crate when you get home, you should tether her to your waist (they make a "Buddy Leash", or you can tie your regular leash to your belt).  That way, when she looks like she might have to go, you can just say "Outside?" and take her.  Do NOT give her any freedom in the house yet!  Have her tethered to you, or in her crate.  Housetraining is all about supervision, using the same words for the same thing (Outside, go pee, go poop), and not letting the dog be free in the house until you are sure she knows that the toilet is outdoors.  Also, do NOT scold the dog if she pees inside.  She will just learn to wait till you aren't around before she pees on the floor, because it's scary to pee in front of you.  Reward her for going outdoors (after she's finished, so she doesn't learn to stop midstream LOL).  Clean any mistakes with an enzymatic cleaner like Petastic or Simple Solution so she won't be tempted by the odor to go in the same spot again.
