    Please help with rescue beagle!!!

We recently got a beagle puppy from a rescue.  He was approx 4 months when we got him and is about 6 months now.  This is our first puppy, so we really are at a loss.

He recently started doing very well with his housetraining.  He is consistently going to the door everytime and sitting on the rug.  Until a couple of weeks ago, he would sit there, I would open the door hook him to the leash and he would go out.  Now every time I go over there to let him out he runs off the rug and wants to start running around.  When he comes near me and I try to grab his collar to put him on the leash he "puppy bites" my hand.  He does this everytime he has to go out and it is becoming very irritating.  How do I get him to stop this and go back to the previous behavior?

He also has a problem with jumping up on people when they come over and has recently started running under the the bed when we try to get him for any reason.  This started when I am getting ready for work in the morning and I know it is because he doesn't want me to leave but now he is doing it at other times as well.

I know this has been very long, but I appreciate any help anyone can give me.  Thanks so much!

oh, what a fun game he's convinced you to play with him-- he sits, you come over and chase him! fun fun fun. I'd suggest you stand still and wait him out. He sits, you go over there, if he starts running around just stand motionless and wait.

Another thing to help out would be to put a trailing line on him (a 10 or 15 foot training lead) at all times.  This way he can't get far away and you're always able to reinforce his recall, rather than being suckered into playing the chase game- which you will never win.

Rory used to do this before our walks when she was little. Its a simple fix, give him one chance to "sit" and if they dont then walk away. You would be giving him the messafge that you arnt gonna play this game and if he wants to go out he will have to be good about it. If he dosnt know sit then this would be the time to enroll him in puppy classes because his mischief is starting to become a issue and it will only get worse as he gets older, bigger, and pushier.
As for the jumping, this is anothe rissue that can be fixed with the help of obediance classes. In the meantime turn your back to him when you see he is about to jump. This is all typical puppy behavior that needs to be fixed or he'll become the pain in the butt dog that is confined when company comes over. its up to you to train him to be the dog you want him to be!

Try this....get his attention, (call him or whatever) then plop down on the floor.  Just sit or lay down. It will probably take all of 3 seconds for him to be in your lap or on top of your head.  This is all play to him.
