What is wrong!?

    What is wrong!?

    I came home from work about 30 minutes ago. The first thing I always do when I come home is feed the dogs. Well, Chico and TJ greeted me at the door, which is a little odd, because usually Pedro is there greeting me too. Anyway, I figured he was just hiding under the couch as he sometimes does. After calling for him about 5,000 times, my mom lifted the couch out and he came.

    He was shaking really bad, wouldn't even hardly come and won't eat. His ears are back and his tail is in-between his legs. To me, he acts as if someone scared or beat the crap out of him.

    He always runs and jumps on me when I walk in the door, with that little butt wiggling. I held him and he was still shaking very badly. He keeps looking around like someone is going to do something. (Very scared/sad/worried look)

    Now, I live with my parents still. I'm not saying they don't like dogs, because they really do.. but when my dad gets annoyed by Chico he will kick at him. It really pisses me off, and I do yell at him about it, but when I'm not here.. I don't know what happens. My sister has also been staying here for awhile until she gets moved into her new house. [We don't really get along] Sad to say, but I don't trust her or my niece. Both of them have complained about my dogs. My sister has also said she "doesn't like small dogs", she hates it when my dogs get on her lap or lick her. My niece always gets in their face, which all of them absolutely hate. I don't think it was my niece, because she's been in school all day and didn't come here after she got out. I'm not trying to even blame anyone.. but he's never acted like this and it worries me. Something had to have happened.

    Is he the dog that's on the steroid medication?  I'd double check with the vet to make sure what's going on might not be due to them.

    Otherwise, I'd find a way to keep him confined so that he doesn't have to deal with the rest of the family.  Especially, for right now when he's not feeling his best and you are having issues with him.

    • Gold Top Dog

    No. Pedro isn't on any medications, Chico is the one who is taking them.

    Red ... pick him up and set him on the bed or somewhere you can really look at him.  Lift his upper lip and look at his gums.  Are they nice and pink as they should be?  If white that is literally a vet emergency.

    The other thing to do is press the tip of your finger on his gum pretty firmly for maybe 10 seconds ... let go and the gum should snap back to 'pink' right away.  Both of those can be signs of internal bleeding.

    Very carefully touch him gently all over.  Make sure he is putting weight on all 4 legs.  Carefully touch his belly, all over his legs, back and chest.  Do you get any reaction or reluctance to let you touch him anywhere?

    My point is -- look him over really well to make sure he didn't get seriously injured.

    Then honestly -- while you have houseguests like this, go and buy 3 small crates and crate them IN YOUR ROOM while you are gone.  (lock your door if you have to -- but they shouldn't bother with the dogs if you aren't there.)

    You can leave radio/tv on while you're gone.  Crating is not cruel -- and I think it's Chico who is a bit afraid of the crate, so if you crate the other two you can leave him out of the crate but IN your room with the door shut.  He may not be terribly happy but it's easier than him getting hurt or plagued to death.  (and frankly this may be part of your answer about why he's been so ill-tempered lately)

    there are times when you gotta do what you gotta do in order to keep them safe.  If this won't work for some reason then figure out what you CAN do to keep the dogs out of everyone's way.  Just saying "you shouldn't do that" isn't going to work (particularly if you are the obvious one who treats the dogs 'better' and no one else cares as much as you do).

    It's too hard for Mom to make sure they stay out of everyone's way (even if she claims she'd be glad to do it) -- when you have a volatile situation like that sometimes you just plain have to take things into your own hand and MAKE SURE no one can get to your dogs.

    I agree, if he does not come out of this in a short time, take him to the vet.

    • Gold Top Dog

    I've looked him over, but not REALLY checked him over. I will do that as soon as I post this.

    Our vets aren't open this late though, and even if you call the Emergency line, they will tell you what they *think* is wrong and what they *think* you should do. Even when my uncle's dog got in a really bad dog fight and was gushing blood, they were told they had to wait until the morning. If he is sick tomorrow, or feeling the same.. I'm taking him to the vet. ANY vet.

    He was gushing blood and they couldn't see a vet that night?  That's unreal.

    Just thought of something that could be related to this.

    Pedro didn't eat at all yesterday and then today they said he was like this. Could he be diabetic? I'll have to check out the symptoms but as soon as he ate, my mom said he stopped shaking. (I was gone for a bit)

    Now he's acting okay, but very tired. You can tell he doesn't feel well. He's still not wrestling around, playing, ect.]

    *Nvm, none of the symptoms related to being diabetic. Maybe it's something else. Man, this is making me worry..

    I've read on here that little dogs do get hyperglycemia--low blood sugar-if they go too long without food.  I'm not too versed in it but I think I've got my facts straight.  Did you ask your mom if anything happened with him while you were gone?  I always ask my husband how Willow was when I get home so I get a full report of her behavior, etc.  Maybe something did happen with the family??  Did someone feed him something that isn't agreeing with him??

    Do his ears look red inside? Maybe it's an ear infection bothering him.  Quite a few of the chi's I know get them pretty often.

     I think that he probably should be seen by a vet.  Hope it works out for the little guy.

    His ears aren't red, his gums look good. (They aren't pink, but aren't white. ..sort of a dark pink with some brown spots.) I softly felt all over his body, everything seems fine.. nothing seems like it's hurting him.

    He's still shaking badly. Quits sometimes, but then starts again. Still acting afraid of everyone and everything..

    I'm keeping a very close eye on him all night. Tomorrow if he isn't acting any better, off to the vet he goes. I don't care if I go in debt, as long as they figure out what is wrong.

    • Gold Top Dog

    Yeah, I think it's best to bring him to the vet.  It could be any number of things from not serious to very serious.  He could be running a fever and that could be causing the shaking too.

    • Gold Top Dog

    Could easily be pain ... a pain response often looks like 'fear' because it's inate (when you're in pain you ARE vulnerable).  But yeah -- definitely to the vet.

    • Gold Top Dog
    I definitely agree that a vet check is in order. Not feeling well can cause them to exhibit fearful behaviors. Give the poor boy lots of TLC and if he wants some space, let him have it.

    I tried to get him to eat yesterday, but he wouldn't.

    Do you think he could be under tons of stress? http://www.wagntrain.com/BodyLanguage2.htm

    As of now, he's laying down in my lap.. calmly. He's doing fine. When people come near me he starts shaking. Maybe all these people in the house are making it hard on him? What should I do?

    * tail between legs

    *ears down

    * lowered body

    * licking air

    I thought of taking him to my aunt's house tomorrow when I go to work.. but I'm worried that will stress him out more. He absolutely loves her though, she had him and then gave him to me.. but just being in a new place and mom's (I'm) not around, maybe it would make matters worse? I know leaving him here while I work (7:30am - 5pm) isn't a good idea either.
