Dr. Yin's Videos

Edited all my posts to remove the necessity for posting a disclaimer.  I find it unfortunate that we can't seem to discuss anything without the behind the scenes tattling.

Wait--we need a disclaimer to post training videos now?  Please tell me it wasn't about the horse penis......For heaven's sake.  What sort of disclaimer is needed?  I find that site interesting and would like to keep discussing it, so I will put up the disclaimer if that means the link can go back up.....

    • Gold Top Dog

Not sure what disclaimer is needed. This link contains content that is apparently offensive to some. Animal sexuality, chicken tricks, and a JRT who gets a bop on the head. Not suitable for PETA members.

    With that, http://www.nerdbook.com/sophia/movies.html

Moderators, if this link needs to be removed can we have a public explanation? It would be useful, as it not evident why this link is problematic.

I don't know that anyone reported this thread, but from the Posting Guidelines

Please do not post links to training clips/sites without including in the post your own experiences with that technique - how you implemented it AND how it worked for you - and a disclaimer that "trying this at home" could be hazardous and when in doubt, consulting a trainer in person is the best idea.

Seems to me a simple disclaimer would have fixed whatever problem there was.

Looking at the CM video thread, this is the only disclaimer I found, so what's good for the goose is good for the gander, no?

    Disclaimer:

You might like to try different methods according with your preferences, personality and beliefs; please do not attempt these techniques yourself without consulting a professional

Is not only about animal sexuality or seeing a dog being punch, doing some of those techniques might get you bitten

By the way, the OP should have qualified this thread with a warning of DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME.  The videos shows:

    - Training a dog in the street.

    - Striking a dog

    - using boobytraps

    - Making sure a dog is hungry before training

    - Using a body block to prevent a dog from leaving a car.  This is so dangerous.

    - Mentions PTS for food resource guarding

    - creates a dog fight situation for purposes of demonostrating

    - Never shows a successful behavior change in the setting of real life

I don't think its a matter of being offensive but a matter of providing responsible instructions to the JQP.  In most of the videos, the trainer takes unnecessary irresponsible risks.  What responsible trainer would ever set up a dog fight to prove that the COME command was solid?  The OP may endorse this trainer and her methods or did not take the time to review each of the video.

So lets talk about the video on a behavior problem that I am getting set up to work on at home.  The Leash Reactivity video.  Although it states that counter conditioning is taking place, I see from the dog's perspective two unrelated activities that don't overlap....getting the dog to pay attention to the owner.....and......the dog noticing there is another dog nearby.

The OP was not asked to remove the link.  The OP was asked to add a disclaimer to the original post.

Yes, we did receive complaints that a video link had been posted without said disclaimer.  And, in fairness, the guidelines do ask for a disclaimer regardless of the nature of the site being linked.

It was not our intention to shut down the thread or in any other way inhibit discussion.

I feel like names removed are misrepresenting the videos to a degree.  The "PTS for resource guarding" is NOT a suggestion made by Dr. Yin. The couple had been told by unnamed other people to put down the dog, and instead worked with Dr. Yin to solve the resource guarding. How is that objectionable?

I do hope that the conversation will continue.  I've been enjoying reading the responses on a personal level.

It was unnecessary drama at the beginning of the video.  I also felt that because of the family's love for the dog, this was not an option.  Dr. Yin controls the content of the video and IMO mentioning in her video that PTS is a solution for a resource guarding problem is irresponsible.   If I recall the video, Dr. Yin showed 4 techniques that might be used to solve the problem.  I think she stated the last technique of having a dog in a sit position was the solution.  My thoughts were, boy that sit better be reliable and whenever I would try and grab the food, there would be hesitation because I would not trust the dog.  I am surprised she did not recommend handing feeding the dog, showing the dog that all resources are controlled by the human.  She definitely used this method for other problems and in other videos.

    content deleted.  Personal attack.

I feel that there has not been any misrepresentation of the videos.  Either its there for all to see or its not.  I can see one out of place mistake but most of the videos are flaw with possibly grave consequences.  I repeat my list of the flaws.

    - Training a dog in the street.

    - Striking a dog

    - using boobytraps

    - Making sure a dog is hungry before training

    - Using a body block to prevent a dog from leaving a car.  This is so dangerous.

    - creates a dog fight situation for purposes of demonostrating

    - Never shows a successful behavior change in the setting of real life

    and add

    - sitting your leash reactive dog right next to another dog while feeding the leash reactive dog treats

    - tieing another dog to a tree to test the progress of a leash reactive dog

    • Gold Top Dog

Well, no surprise I don't consider those all to be flaws.

I like her videos very much, and will slowly make my way through all the various clips she has with different animals.

My trainer worked with us in the street.  And we did off leash obedience work on the sidewalk, next to that same street.  I have body blocked my dog at the car door. I have trained a hungry dog.  I have euthanized a dog. And my trainer used his own dogs to test my dog's reactions. He put his dogs in a down stay in my front yard, and led my dogs around them. He told me his dogs would take a bite before they'd break their down stays, and from what I saw I believe him.

Edited by myself. Referred to content contained in a link that has been removed. It would be confusing to another reader to read my statements and not be able to see for themselves what I or Dog_Ma was talking about and be able to form an opinion separate from ours.

Glenda is quite correct.  I chose to remove my posts because I think the rule is overzealous - we could simply post a sticky on the forum rules with a general disclaimer, and not have everyone pouncing on their "enemies'" posts all the time and tattling to the mods.  Childish.

I assume that the reason for the removal of the clicker videos that were previously stickied was in response to my chosen action here on this thread.  However, you will note that the clicker videos were posted way before the current rule went into effect. So, IMO, they were not in violation.  But, of course, you could always go back and remove all espencer's links to the CM videos in his posts... oh, but then you'd have to spend the next ten years wiping the archives clean of all our video links.
    Huh?
