What was she doing?

    What was she doing?

I have a question about an encounter between my oldest cat and my youngest dog.  The cat, Niko, despises dogs (especially rambunctious young ones) and prefers to avoid them. Sophie (almost 2 year old Beagle mix) is fascinated by the cats and has been very hard to teach about not chasing them. In the past few months she has finally learned some self control and pretty much leaves them alone.

Now, when Sophie and Niko meet, what usually happens is that Niko hisses and growls quite impressively, and Sophie wisely backs off. This doesn't happen often, as the cats have their own room and Niko likes to spend most of her time there.

Today it was a bit different.  Niko came out of her room to sit under the table for a while.  Sophie, as usual, came over to investigate, but she didn't get too close - she stayed several feet away and did a play bow.  She stayed in play bow position, whining and wagging her tail, for quite some time. I finally called her away and she sat leaning against my leg as though she were scared (this is what she does when something worries her).  Niko just sat quietly in her chosen spot the whole time.

Any ideas as to what was going on there? I'm curious as I've never seen this behavior before.

When I first got Kenya, she ignored my cats, so it worked out really well.  None of them were scared of her and if she got too close, they would hiss and swat her, but stand their ground.  Once she settled in, she got more playful and did exactly what you describe.  Beckham would sit under my desk.  Kenya would bow, give a little growl or whine, and then toss her head or spin around.  He just sat there or growled if she reached for him.  I don't know if cats understand dog play behaviors.  My three cats play rough, as rough with each other as my dogs play, but they don't do the same things when they are trying to instigate play.  That's why I assumed Beckham just ignored Kenya when she did dog play behaviors.  I'm glad he wasn't bothered by it and didn't feel he had to run away.  Now that we have Coke, Kenya ignores the cats and plays with him instead.

She probably just doesn't understand the cat. The reason a lot of dogs have problems with cats is because cat language and dog language are not the same. For instance, a cat does look away in submission where a young dog would do to an alpha dog. Cats don't understand play bows and will hiss and such. They'll work it out eventually.

Sophie wanted to play and the cat didn't. Sophie was a little miffed that she couldn't get some play action.

And yes, dogs and cats can miscommunicate at times. Our cat, Jade, will try to start something with Shadow. She presents her side and arches her back to look more intimidating. In cat language, that means "bring it on!" To a dog, side presentation is a calming signal "I'm cool with you and we've got no argument." Shadow will look at her side, yawn, and lay down. I laughed the first few times I saw that.

It's funny you should write this.  Misty won't leave our cat alone either, but we also have a very small Maltese (Tabitha).  She's old (almost 13) and only about 3 lbs.  Misty is always stepping on her, or running her down (when she gets all wound up) and poor Tabitha gives that little growl (if you want to call it that) of hers in discuss and we yell at Misty to watch the baby...etc.  Misty's only 6 mos. now, and I really think she loves Tabitha.  She likes to be close to her, even though Tabitha would prefer it otherwise.  Misty was laying on the floor in front of the couch, Tabitha on the side, under the end table, and Misty just whined and whimpered at Tabitha.  I'm not sure why, but it's not the first time I caught her doing this.  I think she wants to be close to Tabitha, play, cuddle, whatever, but she knows she can't.  We're always telling her to leave her alone, since Tabitha's old, we don't want Misty to trample her to death.  I almost think its a frustration whimper.  Since Sophie was in her playful position, she wanted to play, but knew she couldn't play w/ Niko.  Does this make any sense?  It's kind of hard to explain typing.  Anyway, you're not alone, I don't think Sophie was scared, just bummed, she couldn't play w/ Niko.  More like a bored cry.  LOL
