    Puppy Walking Problems

We have a 12 week old Cavalier King Charles Spanial.

Up until last weekend we could not take her for walks due to injections etc, but she was dead kean to go out - always trying to go onto the street.

We took her for her 1st walk on Saturday and she loved it. As soon as we got back she wanted to go out again. Same again on the Sunday.

But Monday and Tuesday she just won't walk. I try to go one way. She just wants to come home. And chokes herself by pulling on the lead.

If I carry her for a bit and then put her down she will walk just fine. So long as we head for home.

    Help!!! ;)

Give it time . . . my pup was the same way and it took about two months before we finally started walking like "the regular dogs".

How long have you had the dog?

We've had her for 4 weeks.

She's very nice natured. She loves people and isn't scared when outdoors. If she does actually walk, she is fascinated by everything. Anyone coming out of their house or getting out of a parked car she is fascinated with and won't walk.

Like you say it might just take time.

Growing up our puppies always were walked on harness's. Not only because my mother hates the whole idea of collars (she lives in a ideal world) but mainly so when us kids walked the pup we wouldnt inadvertently yank or hurt the pup. I've carried this rule with my dog when she was a pup, things are still developing and growing and I hate the thought of pulling a babe around by the neck, plus they make some really fancy harness's now!
As for the walk in general sometimes you have to entice them into walking. Maybe bring some treats, you face your pup, walk slowly backwards and use a up beat happy vioce and whatever command your gonna use for "lets go" and slowly start walking, picking up the pace so she gets the idea. This is what I did with Rory, she thought it a game at first but thats fine too!
