older housebroken GSD now pooping inside

Our beloved 12 yoGerman Shepherd Dog has started pooping in the house and we are at our wits end..  She is an indoor dog, very submissive for a GSD, and has her CGC.  She is starting to have a bit of trouble getting up and around, but will still jog after a squirrel without too much problem.  She has NEVER had an accident in the house - until recently.  Now she poops in the house on a regular basis.

    More info:
She never pees in the house.
She never poops when we are not home, even after 7 or 8 hours.
She does not hide it, in fact she will do it right in front of us with no warning.
She will do it 2 minutes after coming in from a walk  (we are walking her very often now to very little avail).
She will poop outside some too - its probably 50/50 inside outside now.
She will do it in any area of the house.
She gives no warning - she used to come and get us if she needed out.
She does it in the middle of the night and in the middle of day.
The stool seems normal, not diarrea, and she goes regularly, at least once a day, maybe twice

It started shortly after our 14 YO sheltie, her lifelong companion (and alpha dog) died last summer - can't say for sure if its related though.. Vet knows of no physical reason, but cannot be sure and was not much help. . I don't know if she has just lost control physically, or if she is getting senile.  Please help!  We have a new baby (born well after problem started - she's great with teh baby and our older kids) and its getting to be a real problem.

Thanks in advance for any advice -we are at our wits end.

Have you noticed a change in her movement and gait?  If so, you could be looking at spinal degeneration from arthitis, spondeliosis (sp) or calcification.  It sounds very much as if nerve signals are not getting through easily (the unexpectedness etc)  We have been struggling with this for the last two years or so... We use management strategies to confine Baylor to specific easily cleaned areas when we are not home, I have scheduled meals to make his typical defecation times more predictable and to occur to the times folks are most often home.

It does sound age related, and could be due to the conditions mrv  noted.  It could also be that the sphincter muscles have weakened.

It's not really incontinence as much as it is that they can't 'feel' it.  Particularly you will see sometimes that it will almost just 'fall out'.

When they become more senior sometimes you have to alter YOUR schedule -- you and your spouse have to talk ALL THE TIME "Did she go again yet?" and maybe go FOR a walk or another turn around the yard.  Encourage her to TRY to go.

You might also try acupuncture -- that truly can help SO much to restore some feeling.

Thanks for all the great replies.  I'm afraid you're probably right as it really seems to fit what she's doing.  I thought perhaps it was not physical because she did not do it when we were not home, but thinking about it, it still makes since.  WE don't leave her alone much for very long.  When we do its usually during the day, and the accidents happens more at night.  Plus, it seems to happen when she walks around ("just falls out") and I suspect she just lays around when we are not here.

I'm just chiming in to agree that it's probably just an older dog thing. Millie does this too, well, there is a slight difference. She will do it when we're out, but for all we know, she could do it right after we walk out the door. There isn't much we really do about it. Sometimes she'll go outside, and other times we aren't so lucky. Today was a lost cause since it rained all day, and she will not stay out long enough. She tries to turn around and go in as soon as she goes out, so forcing her to stay out long enough to pee seems cruel enough.

I agree that it is an older dog thing. We have a 12 year old lab and she has the exact same symptoms you stated. We have determined that Lille just can't feel it when she has to go. She will be in the yard for 40 minutes, then comes in and starts to poop after about 5 minutes. She will also poop when she is sleeping. Drives you nuts, but I know she can't help it. She has always been perfectly housebroken until the last year or so. Jennie suggested a homeopathic remedy called "leak no more" we ordered some, hopefully it will help.

    Good luck!
