the whole intent of the OP was to discuss the book.... *excellent idea....let's do that shall we?*

I'll repeat it one last time, as it keeps getting lost apparently. I am interested in seeing how this discussion goes, as perhaps there is something to learn. No, I'm not buying the book. Perhaps that's a little less hurting for some people.

So, since we all showed our intentions of getting or not getting the book at this point, perhaps we shall wait until the ones who will sink their teeth in it and report on it, have an opinion and then reply can be invited.........otherwise, this thing will just spin into oblivion....

he did mention that positive training was great for tricks and teaching dogs NEW things but for severe problems, it was a slower process than his usual correction (called negative in the operant camp) methods.

Yes, definitely slower, but slower doesn't mean inferior. I personally don't trust a quick fix in training - behavioral modification takes time. If you're constantly correcting a dog for bad behavior you run the risk of simply masking it rather than actually fixing it. Flooding a dog isn't necessarily making the dog less fearful, he's simply not showing it anymore.

I won't rush out and buy his book but I'm not opposed to reading it either. My sister bought his previous book and loaned it to me. I read it before I'd ever seen the show, and only saw a few episodes back to back when I was home sick one day. What occurred to me while watching the show and reading his first book was that he is serving a function in educating owners about the need to train dogs, and that most dog owners are completely clueless. But especially, that most of those dogs he's saved from being euthanized would never have needed someone like him if the owners had trained their dogs using positive methods from the very beginning. I'm happy to hear that he's willing to learn and hopefully implement more positive techniques.

well, stay tuned cassidy's mom. there's more in this book than just dog flooding and corrections.....

tho these two line items do seem to have become lot of people's final judgements "cast into stone." in the acknowledgements section of this book, the author acknowledges all women - for the special power that they hold. the author says that he worries about his own kids growing up in an unstable world driven by men seeking power and control.

he goes on to say that there will have to be some very special pack leaders if the world is to be made "right" again and he believes that women hold the key to bringing balance back into the world. he goes on to say - quote...

"...they can't do that until men truly acknowledge the leadership women have to offer - and until women can embrace the pack leaders within themselves. More than most men, many women seem to instinctively know that leadershipdoesn't mean negative energy. It doesn't mean pitting one person against another, one country against another, one religion against another. I also believe that women are more likely than men to act for the good of the pack...."

I'll have to get the book first and yes lively but I don't think painful, heated, or violent.

Well we have not really started yet and it is already a little heated.

As the OP I would like to clarify my objective in posting this topic.

I would like to discuss the book, not Cesar Millan himself, now we can discuss him if it is in reference to the book, but I prefer not to drag in his show, his past, unless it is directly related to the book or the portion of the book which we are discussing.

I as the OP do not have a problem with persons joining the discussion who have no intention of reading the book but would ask that they refrain from just outright bashing of Cesar and try and stick to the topic of the book and the points of the book being discussed.

Since this might get large and hard to follow does anyone have any thoughts on how we might discuss the book? Maybe post by chapter? Or break it down someway or do we just use one thread to discuss the entire thing?

It is written in two parts

    Part 1

    1. Identifying Instability

    2. Discipline, Rewards and Punishment

    3. The Best Toll in the World

    4. Fulfilling Breed (broken down by breed groups)

    Part 2

    5. Dysfunction Junction

    6.Transforming Energy into Action

    7. Leadership for Dogs..........and for Humans

    8. One Four -legged Healers

Epilogue: Humans and Dogs: The Long Walk Home

Appendix: A Quick Reference Guide to Becoming a Better Pack Leader

That seems like a lot of topics for one thread and difficult to stay on track

Has anyone purchased the book or intend to purchase it? Anyone willing to discuss the book? My idea of discussing would not be with the intent of winning anyone over to Cesar or of taking anyone away from following Cesar but would be more along the lines of just discussing the various aspects of the book.

A discussion of his book would be lively, perhaps painful, sometimes heated and could even get downright violent but overall it should be fun.

     Anyone interested?

    MODERATOR REPOSTING OF TOPIC.

Now that we know what the topic of this thread is...it can be discussed. The BOOK...not the man or his financial status, or breeding dogs, or rescuing dogs, etc. THE BOOK. If you read the above topic...and have something on topic to add...please do so. Further off topic posts will also be removed/edited.

i wonder just how many tycoons (rich and poor) are really out there ad i found his story both amusing as well as sad (he even included the m-f word in his text - lol) i'm gonna hold off cuz i'm not sure how dgriego wants to format this discussion.

maybe since she opened up the topic, she sould take the lead in organizing the book discussion. a

I will post the first chapter on another thread for discussion. I started the book yesterday and am enjoying the read. I would like to point out a few things that he mentions in his introduction. We can discuss the introduction if anyone is interested. He mentions that throughout this past year he has learned a lot more about dog behavior from his canine friends and has also learned a lot more about human behavior. He says he has studied more behavioral and scientific research and that he has "joined forces with and studied techniques of those who prefer other methods of helping dogs". He also says that he "took to heart some of the criticisms he received about the last book" which I believe he explains some wanted more "hands on, step by step instruction". He again states that he is not a "dog trainer". He talks about "calm and assertive" energy and says that using his methods will not only help your dog but will help you grow as a person. He says, " The goal of the book is to help you strengthen the bond between you and your dog". He says the "power of the pack idea doesn’t just apply to dogs" and then ties it in with the human species. He ends his introduction stating that his "goal for you is that you use the power of calm assertive energy to become the pack leader in every area of your life".

What I got from his introduction is that he is confident and yet humble. He confesses that he has studied other methods from his critics, which to me states humility and willingness to learn and he seems to be talking more about confidence and team work when he says "pack" and "pack leader" than he is about bossing, delegating or monarchy.

I'll have to see if I can pick this up at the library. My kids birthday's are 9 days apart so money is always a bit tight this time of the year LOL!

The table of contents is very intriguing, I'm really looking forward to it!

I will post the first chapter on another thread for discussion.

Excuse the idiot question...but you are not actually posting the text of said chapter correct? Just discussing it? Posting it without permission of the author could get the company here in some deep doo doo...so I have to ask and perhaps look the doofus....which strangely feels comfortable for me...LOL.
