    Behavior change after neuter

Hi! I have a 4 year old that just got neutered when we brought in a new puppy due to my mother in laws illness. This is supposed to be temporary. Her dog is 7 mos.old and needed to be neutered. So we thought that we would get our dog neutered as well.So this way one wouldn't want to play while recooperating.Well her dog came out just fine no pain and acts the same as usual...very hyper pup.Our dog is in pain, won't jump up on the couch..or our bed to go to sleep. He acts afraid that he might be in pain as a result. He cries when you pick him up or sometimes when he does jump up.He recently has been not so much cowering behind the chair...but laying down there or sitting there behind the chair.I know he probably doesn't feel good for one.But i'm also wondering that since he is 4 yrs. old that he feels like he lost his "manhood" so to speak?! Is this normal?I just want him back to the way he was....fun and loveable....I feel bad for getting him neutered now and hope i didn't break his spirit any.....any suggestions? Thank you...for any help![:(]

All dogs are different after surgery.  Three of my girls were just fine after spaying, and were back to their normal activities within a few days - didn't need Elizabethan collars because they never bothered their stitches.  My latest has had "conehead" since Thursday because she won't leave herself alone and is a very energetic girl - in fact, we are still worried about the damage she could do to herself and have added valerian to our arsenal!

since it takes up to 6 weeks for the testosterone levels to drop after neutering, I'd guess it's not because he "lost his manhood".
Is the incision site swollen? Did the vet offer some pain pills?

I had our dog neutered at 2.5 years. The surgery meant nothing to him. The traumatic part, for him and me, was the overnight stay at the vet's clinic kennel. The following day, at home, he ate a little and rested a lot and seemed morose, like he wasn't sure we were accepting him back home. I cooked steak that night as a treat for him being so brave. After the steak, he was back to his old self. I agree, it has nothing to do with the hormones or losing his testicles. That is a human male frailty.

You're dog will be fine in a while, but he may be, indeed, in pain.

How is your dog doing?  I hope he is better now, the way you describe his actions is not normal.  So if he's not better you need a recheck with  your vet.
