seperation anxiety

    seperation anxiety

I adopted a 1 year old Shar-pei mix (caddy) in april, since then everything has been great.. she is house trained and has never had a problem being in her crate during the day.  She has broken out of it once or twice and preceeded to wreck the house, but thats why we have crates anyway.

recently when my girlfriend and I put her in her crate when we go to work or even when we go shopping for an hour, she pees herself, in her crate.  Whenever she is out of her crate she has no problems letting us know when its time to go outside to pee.  This has become a problem of late and I can't figure out how exactly I can get her to stop peeing in her crate.

Things that have happened since she started peeing in her crate:
    -new dog food
-she ate the "pan" at the bottom of her crate (I ordered a new one and it should be here soon)

Whenever my girlfriend gets ready to leave caddy does get timid and sad, so I have a feeling she is feeling seperation anxiety, is the peeing a major part of this?

As for exercise being an issue, its very possible, I take her for long walks (20-30min) or put her on the treadmill for 20-30min almost everyday. probably 5 out of 7 days in a week.. I know i should walk her more..

Any suggestions and or help would be greatly appriciated.
Here is a picture of my baby, she is such a great dog and I'd really like to figure out what I can do to resolve this issue.

after reading some other posts, is it possible she has a UTI?

what do I need to do to see if she does have a UTI?

Take her to the vet, it can cause more problems if she has one.
How long do you leaver her in the crate?
Also its great to giver her some sort of distraction as your gf is leaving, like a kong with a treat in it. It dosnt sound to severe yet so thats great that your nipping it in the bud!

ok, visit to the vet added to the list..

she is in her crate anywhere from 4 to 6 hours at worst 7 or 8 hours.. my gf and I work different schedules so it tends to work out that she isn't in her crate for long.

she isn't a big fan of the kongs with treats in them, she is a huge fan of ropes and stuffed animals with rope knots for arms/legs.. we plan to work on it a bit this weekend, but just want to gather as much information as possible.

Well you anrt leaving ehr in too long, sorry I had to ask, you'd be surprised!
My girl donst care for kongs either but I know a lot of dog's do, she just dosnt like anything plastic
For long chewing treats I've found she likes cow hoof best. They can be stinky and some peopel dont apporve of them cause 1 in every 80 dogs chip their tooth but kids shouldnt run with scissors either [:)]
Anyhoo I'll get some, fill em with peanut butter, freeze them overnight and she LOVES them. Its all about distraction from you leaving. Maybe try putting her in the crate for a couple of minuters when your home and then rewarding her when she is silent and good. Also if your gf is amking a big production out of leaving (like I used to, all cuddly talk and kisses) that makes it sad for them. Its hard but its less emotional for them if you just leave with no frills
