Baxter, my chi/pom male (guy in the signature), has been licking our furniture lately. He's doing it so hard and so often, he is leaving bare spots in the fabric. We're at our wits end training wise and have a vet appointment for him next Tuesday. Is this possibly behavioral?
A little on his background: Bax was a rescue who came to us with a lot of issues. We're pretty sure he was used as a stud dog and we know he was never allowed to be in the house if he was not on a leash or in his crate. After seeing his fear aggression with men, we're almost positive that he was abused. He was also about 3 pounds underweight.
So far: We have tried redirection. When we cannot be in the room with him, he is crated. However, when he is sitting on someone's lap, he starts by licking their hand and moves on to the chair. I'm looking for a trainer as we speak to put him through his paces at basic obedience as he is a quick learner, but has no house manners.
Could this be behavioral or is this a possible medical issue? As I stated before, we already have a vet appointment for him, but I would at least like a starting point if anyone has any suggestions.
Any suggestions or comments are greatly appreciated.
