    Barking Mad

anyone seen this show on TV?, it's sort of a "dog whisperer" but it's not only for dogs, and they work with +R mostly. Sort of interesting, the sort of problems they show are more "every day" issues as in opossed to the extreme cases you see in DW; and they just teach the owners what to do and come back a few weeks later to check progress, as a matter of fact that's the part I thought was most interesting.

The only problem is that it's a some odd hour, gotta say..the DVR is a great invention.

Never heard of it, but it sounds interesting.  I think I'll check the TV menu and see if I can find it.

As far as I'm aware, Barking Mad's been on TV quite a bit longer than Millan.

I like to watch it and find it very interesting as well as a great show for +R. I believe it comes on weekdays at 8:30am ... I used to watch it a bit... but now I'm on the road then [&:]

I've seen it aand I thought it was alright. I have seen a few where They have taken a horse who can't stand men and tamed it so the male owner can fianly ride, they teach dogs not to attack the vaccum while the owner clean. It seems like they fix very odd problems that the owner has no idea how to fix. I have almost never been able to sit throught a whole show because I didn't find it that entertaining and most of the methouds they use are not shown on camar, usaly it takes few months for the training so you don't see the whole thing.

i saw an episode of it for the first time this weekend.

it was ok. i didnt like that they would introduce a pet with a problem, and then jump to another pet before finishing with the first one.

I've seen it a few times and I liked it, from a behavioral aspect.  It's British so it's very dry and not particularly entertaining to mainstream viewers.  I haven't seen it in a while so my memory of the show is a bit fuzzy.

I agree.  I'm happier with it than I am with CM, since the methods are more positive, but I would really like it if one of the networks would pick up on someone like Kathy Sdao, or Patricia McConnell - really knowledgeable and quite funny.  I don't always agree with everything they say, either, but at least I don't feel like I have to tell people not to try their methods at home...[8|]

Yeah, the way I see it if your average joe is going to try something he/she saw on tv it might as well be this as in opossed to a CM kind of thing. It was also interesting to see them work with cats, I have to say that was a first for me.

I have seen it a couple of times. I liked that they take a holistic view of the problem... not just "how do I correct this behavior" but why is it happening and are there things I can do generally to help the situation (whether it's changing the environment or whatever). However, I agree that the format of jumping from pet to pet made it a little hard to stay tuned in.

I loved this show and watched every episode they cared to play on Animal Planet while I was over in the States. Until I'd seen them all. I didn't find it dry in the least. But then, we really like our British television over here. I'm quite used to their manner and find them endearing. The presenters are actually quite engaging once you "get to know" them. I loved this show because of it's holistic approach, like Jones said. I thought it was fantastic that no problem was automatically thrown in the too hard basket. I saw them train a duck with a visual version of clicker training, train a sheep, and make toys for a giant Pacific octopus. Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't most shows like this jump from case to case? I always thought it was a good incentive for staying tuned because you'd get to see what happened with the animal later on. And if one case wasn't that interesting, another that was started soon after might be.

Anyway, I thought the methods they used were creative, positive and sensible. It was enlightening to see them showing you that anything could be trained with the right methods and a bit of work. They did show the methods on camera so you knew what was being done, but of course they can't show the whole process. The duck training blew me away. I thought it was genius.

Their behaviourists are actually really knowledgeable. They have Kelly Marks for horses, and the woman is a genius when it comes to talking to horses. It's inspiring to watch her work. I think part of what is so great about this show is that it isn't all about dogs. Their motto is to facilitate the bond between owners and their pets and bring the two closer together with gentle methods. What could be more needed in this day and age?

I'm sure Kathy Sdao and Patricia McConnell are wonderful, but I personally have never seen a behaviourist on this show say something I've doubted. And I've never seen a behaviourist to rival Kelly Marks. As a very opinionated and critical behaviourist in training, I like to think that I can judge a good behaviourist. [;)]

I also really enjoy this show. I don't remember seeing an episode where I disagreed with the way in which they handled the situation. All positive reinforcement, training the owners as much as the pet, fixing the true cause of the problem and lots of rewards.

They almost always resolve each animals case in each episode, but they do break the segments up. That format doesn't bother me at all. Only once can I remember a case that carried over to another episode, but it was a very long-term problem, so it made sense. I really like the guy host, who I believe is a veterinarian.

Yep, that's right. He also delights in building elaborate habitats for animals. I love seeing both his enthusiasm for building pet playgrounds and his creativity.

I like Barking Mad.  They deal with some unique problems, and I like the way the show the owner how to solve them.

Back around 1997, Patricia McConnell did have a show on Animal Planet.  For all I know, it was in repeats by then, but that's when AP was added to our cable line up.  Anyway, her ex husband, Doug was on the show with her.  I had never heard of her before, and liked her immediately.  It would be great if she did another show.
