    Stay away from the horses!

My 2 yr old min pin runs straight for under our horses feet. She is always on the leash and so she is out of danger, but I will call her to stay away from them and she just pulls on the leash toward them. How do I teach her that is bad and she will get kicked? A reliable recall?

Get the DVD "Really Reliable Recall".  The other thing you may want to teach her is "leave it".  Put her on a leash and toss a milk bone out in front of her where she can see it, but not reach it.  Don't say her name, don't pull (remember, you should have thrown it far enough so she couldn't get to it).  Then, just keep saying "leave it" over and over until she turns her head to look back at you.  Then, you can say "gooood leave it" "take it" (and feed her a good treat, like roast beef).  She will learn that you always have something better for her than the thing she left.

Before we were married, my wife had outside dogs and horses.  We still have the horses, but Odie stays inside.  When outside, he shows little interest in the horses.  Frankly, he seems afraid of them and that, to me, is a good thing.  When he looks at them it is like he thinks, 'that's the biggest dog I have ever seen.'

Anyway, my wife says the horses always taught the dogs not to mess with them.  There is, of course, always the possibility that the dog could die during that lesson so Anne's way is probably better.  [:)]
