First Walk & Leash

    First Walk & Leash

We would like to start walking our 8 week year old puppy.  I have been putting her collar on her for the past week (on for about 15 min's then off again), to get her used to it.

I am wondering if she is too young to go for a walk (she is a 2.6 pound Yorkie-poo), and if it is okay, about how far should I take her?  Also, should I keep her on a leash, or should I try to get her to walk with us (in safe areas) without the leash?  She has not tried to run away from us AT ALL to this point.

Wow I almost forgot those good ole days, before Rory realized there are other things in this world besides me! She was so cute all ears and big feet following me from the car to the front door.
Ok Ok, nostalgia over. I walked Rory all the time when she was that young but she is a pittie, far bigger then your lil love. Its great that you have started putting the collar on. I would not advise you to actually go for a walk just yet. She might not respond very well adn her lil neck is sooooo vulnerable. I say maybe put it on her and leave the leash super slack, not loose enough for her to get tripped up in it but never allow it to pull or startle her. Thats harder to do then it sounds, haha!

There's really no need to walk such a little wee one, and she probably hasn't had all her immunizations yet anyway, has she?  It's a good idea to keep them off public areas until fully immunized.  Also, you should probably look for a harness for her when you do start to walk her, as small dogs are prone to tracheal problems from collars.  My little one (5 pounds full grown) wears a collar with her id tags but when I walk her, she has a snazzy harness.  When she was a pup I got her a really neat harness that was a leash and harness all in one, it's silver and gold and still fits her.  It's a real simple design, but awful hard to describe.

Also, when you do start to walk her, make them very short walks, give her time to build up strength in her muscles and bones.

Start walking her around the house. Teach her to walk nicely on leash right off the bat, in very short practice sessions indoors (like just a couple of minutes each). You'll thank yourself later when you really do have to take her for walks.

Please exscuse my lil dog ineptitude but I didnt think of a harness like angelmarie suggested. Thats a great idea cause you can put it on her without walking, just to get used to and I have seen some cool ones!

I think I need pictures of these Yorkie Poos before I talk about them any more[;)]

I'd also reccomend a harness, for getting her used to walking. You can get itty bitty ones at all the chain pet stores, and if the dog ones aren't small enough, they have them for rabbits, ferrets, and lizards.

Emma used to not leave my side, then she realized that she could. Now, she's got enough training "under her collar" that she won't leave my side, without expressed permission. That took a couple of years, though[;)]

Okay... here is Daisy.... I hope this works.

I will post a picture of Duke as soon as I know how to add a second picture to my signature (right now they won't take pictures together!)

To add a photo to my post, do I use the same format???

    Let me try.......

Edited to say, This is Duke! Not a very good picture, but he is shy of the camera.... I can never get a good picture of him!

Aww! Are Duke and Daisy related? Such cute puppies!
    • Gold Top Dog
No, they are not related.... but they look soooo much alike! As soon as we saw her, we knew that she had to be a part of our family. Everyone asks if he is her dad!

You keep saying Daisy is 8wks. old. Isn't she older than that now. Seems like she's been the same age for several weeks. My little girl Maddie is now 13wks. She wears a small collar most of the day. She didn't like it at first, but she has grown accustomed to it. I do take her for short walks in the back yard or down the sidewalk. She does very well and does not pull or buck. When she's had enough, she lets me know and I pick her up. I've even tried walking both Dugan and Maddie at the same time. She follows her brother wherever he goes . It will be nice someday to take both of them for a long walk together. Good Luck!

I posted yesterday about how I train pups to walk on a leash. It's here: [linkhttp://forum.dog.com/asp/tm.asp?m=85842&mpage=1&key=leash𕗯]http://forum.dog.com/asp/tm.asp?m=85842&mpage=1&key=leash𕗯[/link]

I agree that you need a harness but I doubt you will find a harness to fit that babe. (I never can). What I use is a harness made for ferrets and other small animals. The one I use (which I think is great) is the one in this picture. (It comes with a matching leash.)

I started putting my puppy on a leash when she was 8 weeks old, at first only in the yard when she went potty so she could get used to the idea, and then after a few days slowly we started going for very short walks around the house. I don't know if you have tried to walk her on the leash at all yet, but my puppy absolutely hated it for the first week. We had to coax her along with tiny bites of hot dog, to get her to move a few feet, but it works great. She is 12 weeks old now and walks great on a leash, I am really glad that I trained her as early as I did.

Yes, Cynacam, she is older now[:D]..... time just flies by way too quickly.  She is now 11 weeks, I can't believe it!

Thanks Bunni for the link to the other post, very helpful.

I have been putting the collar on her on and off and she is slowly getting used to it.  She is such a smart little thing!
